Monte Tchota Natural Park at about 1000 metres is where the climb to Pico D'Antónia begins, a short drive from your Praia hotel. Santiago's highest summit sits at 1394 metres on this guided 6-hour day. The finish runs through Longueira before drop-off back in Praia.
Hotel collection in Praia is followed by the transfer to Monte Tchota, a quieter plant and bird community than the city coast. The climb covers about 4.2 km among endemic plants and birds. On a clear day the summit can look toward Fogo, so the picnic stop at 1394 metres is worth a pause. Carry food you can eat there, because a meal is not supplied.
Steep rock then drops into seasonal fields of corn, mango, coffee, and tomato, and houses cut into Longueira's mountain come next. A visit to a local family sits on the published route after the fields, not as a restaurant lunch. Hiking poles are an extra and are not included, so bring walking sticks if you have them. The vehicle returns you to Praia at the end of the six hours.
Pico D'Antónia is the high point of Santiago Island at 1394 metres. Monte Tchota Natural Park, inland from Praia at about 1000 metres, is a quieter plant and bird community than the city coast. Longueira is the last stretch of walking, with houses in the mountainside below the peak.
Praia is only a short drive from the park at both ends of the day. When the weather is kind, the top can look toward Fogo. The family visit sits after the fields.
Shade is scarce on the 4.2 km climb, so a hat, sunscreen, and water matter as much as hiking shoes and walking sticks. Guests need to be at least 16 and ready for a challenging climb plus a steep rock descent. Hiking trousers are strongly recommended from August to November.
A mountaineering qualification is not required, but you should be used to long uphill walking. Hiking poles are listed as an extra. Carry picnic food for the 1394-metre stop if you want to eat at the summit.
Guides know the endemic plants, the 4.2 km line to Pico D'Antónia, and the steep descent toward Longueira. Hotel pickup in Praia and the Monte Tchota start are locked in so you are not left finding the 1000-metre trailhead on your own.
Eight is the most we take, which keeps the summit path manageable. The family visit in Longueira sits after the fields, then the vehicle returns you to your hotel in Praia.
Pico D'Antónia is a hard day out. You start around 1000 metres in Monte Tchota Natural Park and climb about 4.2 km to 1394 metres, then descend steep rock toward Longueira.
Hiking shoes and walking sticks are strongly recommended. This is a different day from the downhill valley walk in Serra Malagueta, so come ready for height gain and a steep finish.
Pico D'Antónia is booked from 16 upward, which matches the challenging climb and steep rock descent. Adult places run from 16 to 99.
Younger walkers are not booked on this summit day. If you are travelling with teenagers, check they are ready for several hours on steep paths.
No. Hiking poles are listed as an extra and are not included in the booking. Walking sticks are still strongly recommended, so bring your own if you have them.
Hiking shoes, hiking trousers especially from August to November, a hat, sunscreen, and water are also on the requirements list. We do not supply those items on the day.
Your Praia hotel is the morning meeting point, then we drive to Monte Tchota Natural Park at about 1000 metres, which is where the walking begins.
Share your hotel name when you book so the morning collection fits the 6-hour window. The day ends with drop-off back at your accommodation in Praia.
The published route includes a picnic stop at the summit, but a meal is not listed as supplied. Bring food you can carry if you want to eat at 1394 metres.
Water is also on the requirements list, so pack enough for the climb, the steep descent, and the walk through Longueira before the drive back to Praia.
Pico D'Antónia is the highest point on Santiago at 1394 metres. From the top you look over the island, and Fogo can appear on the horizon when the weather is clear.
The park below holds endemic plants and birds, which your guide talks about on the way up. Cloud can sit on the ridge, so treat the Fogo view as a bonus rather than a promise.
After the steep descent you walk through seasonal fields of corn, mango, coffee, and tomato, then among houses cut into Longueira's mountain. A visit to a local family is part of the published route.
The stop is a look at daily life in that hillside community, then we drive back to Praia. It is not a restaurant lunch like the Serra Malagueta day.
Shared groups on Pico D'Antónia stay at 8, and a solo walker can still join when a date is open.
That cap keeps the line shorter on the 4.2 km climb and the steep rock descent. If you want a quieter summit, the small group size is already built in.
This climb needs good conditions. Wind, rain, or poor visibility on Pico D'Antónia can change whether the summit is safe, and we will contact you if the day cannot run.
Watch the messages we send after you book. A flexible date in Praia helps if the ridge needs a later window.
Cancel 2 days or less before the Pico D'Antónia climb and the cancellation fee is 100%. Cancel 6 days or less before and it is 50%. Cancel up to 1000 days before the event and it is 0%.
The vehicle and guide slot are already assigned. Write to us as soon as plans change if you need another Praia pickup morning.
