A two-day training course designed for experienced paddlers looking to develop the skills needed to lead groups on grade 2/3 white water rivers. This course focuses on leadership, safety, and paddling techniques in real conditions, ensuring participants gain the confidence and ability to manage a group effectively on moving water.
The course begins with an introduction to leadership techniques and group management in white water environments. Each day will be spent on the river, putting theory into practice and developing both personal paddling and leadership skills. Expect to refine stroke techniques for navigating rapids, improve boat control, and practise setting safety cover for a group.
Participants will work through various scenarios to enhance their ability to make quick, informed decisions in different conditions. Rescue techniques will be covered, including managing capsizes and supporting less experienced paddlers. The course also includes discussions on route selection, risk management, and the responsibilities of a white water leader.
Throughout the training, instructors provide continuous feedback, helping participants refine their skills and prepare for future assessments. By the end of the two days, paddlers should feel more confident leading small groups on grade 2/3 rivers and be ready to progress toward assessment.
The course takes place on a variety of rivers in South West England, selected based on water levels and conditions at the time. This ensures participants experience a range of environments, from technical rapids to more open sections that require precise boat control.
The exact location will be confirmed closer to the course date.
Participants must have prior experience paddling on white water and should feel comfortable on grade 2/3 rivers. Attendance at a Paddle UK White Water Safety course is required, along with Full Paddle UK Membership.
A valid 2-day First Aid certification (completed within the last three years) and Safeguarding Training (also within the last three years) are essential.
