The Mountain Leader Award prepares you to confidently lead groups in the hills, mountains, and moorlands of Ireland and the UK under summer conditions. This advanced training builds on the Mountain Skills foundation and provides instruction in navigation, hazard management, group care, and leadership. By the end of the course, you will be ready to safely take responsibility for others in remote and challenging mountain terrain.
Mountain Leader 1 (2-day course)
You will focus on the core skills necessary to operate safely on challenging terrain. This includes both macro and micro navigation, party management, roped and un-roped steep ground techniques, and night navigation exercises. Instruction will also cover hazard assessment, river crossings, mountain weather interpretation, group care, and incident procedures.
Mountain Leader 2 (3-day course)
Building on ML1, this course expands into expedition planning, camp craft, and additional risk management, including more complex river crossings. Leadership exercises are emphasised alongside access, conservation, and environmental awareness. You will be challenged with practical exercises designed to simulate real-world mountain conditions and leadership scenarios.
Mountain Leader Training Week (5-day course)
This complete course covers all aspects of the Mountain Leader syllabus, consolidating skills from ML1 and ML2. Each day alternates between practical exercises on steep and remote terrain and classroom-based instruction to cover navigation, leadership, risk management, and mountain rescue procedures. By the end, you will have applied all techniques in real situations, building confidence in decision-making and group supervision.
Pre-Assessment Refresher Days
These sessions focus on specific areas of the Mountain Leader Assessment that you may wish to strengthen, including night and steep ground navigation. You will receive tailored instruction on areas of concern, ensuring you enter your assessment with confidence and competence.
Courses take place in County Donegal, offering a mixture of rugged coastline, remote sea stacks, and upland mountain terrain. This provides realistic training in navigation, steep ground movement, and leadership under varied summer conditions.
Instruction uses lesser-known trails, coastal cliffs, and upland areas to replicate challenging scenarios. By training here, you gain first-hand experience in the same type of terrain encountered on Mountain Leader assessments and professional mountain guiding.
Candidates must have successfully completed a Mountain Skills Assessment (MSA) and maintain an official MI logbook of mountaineering activities. A good level of fitness is required for extended walks, steep ground travel, and overnight expedition practice.
Previous leadership experience is helpful but not required. Participants should be prepared to spend extended periods in the mountains, including walking on uneven terrain, carrying personal equipment, and participating actively in group exercises.
Iain leads all courses with over 30 years of mountaineering and climbing experience in Ireland and the UK. He is a fully qualified Mountain Instructor, Winter Mountain Leader, and Mountain Leader, with extensive knowledge of Donegal’s mountains, coasts, and islands.
Since 2005, he has explored and developed hundreds of routes on sea stacks, islands, and mountain terrain, giving participants access to remote and atmospheric locations. Iain’s guidance ensures that every candidate gains practical skills, confidence, and independence to lead groups safely in summer mountain conditions.
