This course is ideal for those looking to become more independent in the hills or as preparation for future mountain expeditions. Along the way, you’ll experience the beauty and wildlife of the Lake District’s high fells.
The course will take place in the Central Lake District, with specific routes selected closer to the date to match the group’s ability and weather conditions. Possible highlights include Helvellyn, Crinkle Crags, or the Langdale Pikes, all offering dramatic views and challenging terrain.
Food and accommodation are not included. Participants are encouraged to arrange their own accommodation in the Central Lake District, such as hostels, B&Bs, or campsites. Recommendations can be provided upon booking.

You don’t need extensive experience, but you should be comfortable with moderate hillwalking. The terrain includes uneven paths and some exposed ridges, so a basic level of confidence on hills is essential.
This expedition requires a moderate fitness level. You should be able to walk for 6 hours a day with breaks, carrying a daypack with essentials such as food, water, and spare clothing.
We’ll tackle some of the Lake District’s most exciting ridge walks, such as Helvellyn via Striding Edge, or similar routes. The exact itinerary will depend on group ability and weather conditions, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.
You’ll learn ridge walking techniques, safe navigation, route planning, and how to tackle more exposed terrain confidently. Our expert leader will also share tips on understanding weather, reading the landscape, and improving personal hillwalking skills.
The starting location will be confirmed closer to the date, based on group ability and weather. Routes will be in the Central Lake District. Pick-up and drop-off from Oxenholme train station can be arranged with prior notice.
No, accommodation is not included. You’ll need to arrange your own accommodation in the Central Lake District. We recommend nearby hostels, B&Bs, or campsites. We can provide suggestions upon booking.
Safety is our priority. In poor weather, we’ll adjust the routes to ensure safe but still rewarding walks. The Lake District offers a variety of terrain, so we can always find a suitable route.
The group size is capped at 8 participants to ensure personalised guidance and a high-quality experience for everyone.
Meals are not included. Please bring your own packed lunch and snacks for each day. We’ll provide guidance on suitable food to pack upon booking.
Yes, participants can join for individual days if they prefer. The cost is £80 per person per day. However, joining all four days allows for a more comprehensive learning experience.
Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed on this expedition due to the challenging terrain and group logistics.
All under-18s must be accompanied by a participating adult. If you are planning to join an expedition with someone under 18, please let us know in the comments when you book. That way, we can check that it will be suitable, or offer alternatives before you make payment. We have had young people join our expeditions in the past, and would love to make this work for everyone keen to join.
