Gain a solid foundation in sea kayaking while exploring the protected waters around the Applecross peninsula. This two-day introductory experience offers high-quality coaching and scenic paddling routes, with options for either self-catered flexibility or a fully inclusive package that includes accommodation and meals.
This is ideal for those who prefer to arrange their own accommodation and meals. You’ll join a small group for two full days of sea kayaking based from Lochcarron. Day one begins with dryland briefing and shore-based coaching to cover the essential techniques. You’ll learn how to paddle efficiently, control your direction, and deal with simple capsize scenarios in a supportive and shallow-water setting.
Day two is a guided full-day sea kayaking journey, designed to put your skills into practice. The planned route may include paddling through the Strome Narrows, passing historic sites such as the 14th-century Strome Castle, or heading out to the Kishorn Islands – a great spot to see seals, otters, and seabirds. With a relaxed lunch stop on a remote beach, this is a chance to explore local coastlines while building confidence on longer trips.
The fully inclusive experience includes everything you need for a comfortable weekend, with accommodation and catering provided. You’ll stay locally for three nights in Lochcarron, close to the village amenities, and all meals (except arrival evening) are included. Your kayaking follows the same format as the trip-only option, with expert instruction on the first day covering paddle strokes, safety, and boat handling.
The second day sees you head out on a longer expedition, supported by your instructor. Routes are selected based on conditions but usually include scenic sections of coastline, sheltered bays, and inlets rich in wildlife. The inclusive package means no need to think about logistics – just turn up ready to paddle, relax, and make the most of your time on the water.
All sessions are based in Lochcarron, a west coast Highland village overlooking a tidal sea loch. The meeting point is the Lochcarron Golf Club car park. The area is known for its shallow, sheltered water which is ideal for learning, as well as access to beautiful routes along the Applecross coastline.
If you're staying outside Lochcarron – such as in Shieldaig, Applecross or Torridon – plan your driving time accordingly using Google Maps.
Accommodation is not included with the Trip Only option, but there are several guest houses and self-catering cottages in Lochcarron within easy reach of local shops and restaurants. Recommended places include Castle Cottage B&B on the loch shore and options via HomeToGo or VRBO.
For camping or hostel stays further afield, Shieldaig and Applecross have sites, while the SYHA hostels in Torridon and Applecross are also options. The Fully Inclusive option includes 3 nights of local accommodation and all meals except for the arrival evening.
Participants should have good general fitness and be comfortable spending a full day outdoors. No previous kayaking experience is required. Children from age 8 can join when paddling in a double kayak with an adult family member. The activity is suitable for beginners wanting to experience sea kayaking without committing to a full expedition.
The instructors live locally and have years of experience coaching in the waters around Lochcarron and the Applecross peninsula. This local insight allows routes to be tailored to the group and conditions, giving you a more personal and informed experience.
