Follow a supportive 12-week pathway toward Climbing Wall Instructor qualification with one coached day per week, emergency outdoor first aid, priority assisting on client sessions and feedback plans from experienced staff. Training and assessment courses run with partner providers at Leeds and Bradford walls when prerequisites are met.
Start a structured 12-week development pathway designed to prepare aspiring coaches for the Mountain Training Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI) qualification. Your mentor coaches you through group management, progressive coaching drills, bouldering spot techniques, teaching knots, and running engaging wall sessions for diverse client groups.
The traineeship combines weekly coached coaching days with priority assistant-instructor placements on live youth and beginner sessions, giving you invaluable real-world floor experience. You receive regular written feedback, personal action plans, and mock assessment debriefs from senior instructors to ensure you are fully prepared for your assessment.
Traineeship modules take place across partner climbing centres in the Leeds, Bradford, and Harrogate areas, including premier facilities such as The Climbing Hub and The Big Depot. This multi-wall exposure gives trainees a broad understanding of different wall geometries, autobelay systems, and client management.
We confirm the rotation schedule, wall access arrangements, and coaching dates before your traineeship commences. Trainees must have reliable transport between West Yorkshire partner walls and come equipped with personal climbing gear and a coaching logbook.
At least six months of regular climbing wall experience with roughly twenty logged visits, and registration on the Mountain Training CWI scheme before you start.
A passionate attitude toward teaching and good interpersonal skills are essential. Please discuss your background with our coaching team upon enquiry so we can verify your readiness for the programme.
Mentors are active wall coaches who know what CWI assessors expect, so mock sessions mirror real assessment tasks. You build floor hours on live NICAS and beginner sessions rather than only practising with other trainees.
You will be coached directly by experienced Mountain Training course directors and senior instructors who know exactly what examiners look for during CWI assessments. Our trainees benefit from hands-on client hours and emergency outdoor first aid training integrated right into the programme.
Your weekly coached day rotates between partner walls in Leeds, Bradford and Harrogate. We email the wall address, parking and start time for each block before week one.
Allow time for centre induction and kit checks on your first visit to each venue.
The programme suits aspiring climbing wall instructors aged 17 and over who are registered on the Mountain Training Climbing Wall Instructor scheme and want structured mentoring before assessment. You should already climb and belay regularly at a wall and enjoy working with groups.
We expect roughly six months of wall experience and about twenty logged visits before you start. A short conversation with our coaching team confirms whether your background matches the pace of the twelve-week pathway.
Your fee covers one coached training day per week for twelve weeks, emergency outdoor first aid training, wall entry on those coached days and harness or helmet hire when you need it on training days.
Mountain Training registration fees, BMC membership, extra recreational wall visits and your CWI assessment course with partner providers are not included. We outline typical assessment costs when you enquire so you can budget ahead.
Sessions rotate across partner climbing centres in Leeds, Bradford and Harrogate, including venues such as The Climbing Hub and The Big Depot. Exposure to different wall layouts helps you understand varied autobelay systems and client flows.
We email the weekly rota, parking and start times before your first block. Reliable transport between West Yorkshire walls is essential because venues change through the programme.
Bring personal climbing shoes, harness and helmet if you own them, plus comfortable clothing for long sessions on the wall. A coaching logbook and notebook help you capture feedback between weeks.
Pack lunch and water for each training day because café queues can eat into coaching time. Chalk and a small rucksack keep your kit organised when you move between walls.
Solid indoor belay competence, regular climbing mileage and genuine enthusiasm for teaching beginners and youth groups are essential. NICAS shadowing or volunteer assisting at your home wall strengthens your application.
Talk to us when you enquire so we can sense-check readiness against Mountain Training prerequisites. We may suggest extra belay practice weeks before your start date if that sets you up for success.
Mentors supervise assisted sessions within each centre’s operating procedures and coach rescue awareness throughout the programme. Safeguarding induction, DBS expectations and emergency protocols are covered in the opening weeks.
You will not be left alone with paying clients until mentors agree you are ready. Feedback is direct and constructive so you understand both strengths and gaps before assessment.
Formal CWI assessment with partner providers is available when Mountain Training prerequisites are met; many trainees assess from age 18 even if they joined at 17. Mock teaching tasks and written action plans prepare you before you book an assessment slot.
Assessment dates and fees are set by the provider you choose; we help you interpret mock debriefs but do not award the qualification ourselves. Plan assessment for shortly after the traineeship ends while skills are fresh.
You can join the traineeship from age 17 with parental consent and centre induction requirements met. Formal CWI assessment typically requires candidates to be 18, which Mountain Training sets nationally.
Under-18 trainees may still complete most coached content and placements while waiting for a birthday before booking assessment. We explain consent paperwork when you confirm your place.
Log belay sessions, shadow NICAS coaches and keep climbing between coached days so skills stay sharp. Review Mountain Training candidate guidance and register on the scheme before week one if you have not already.
Ask us for a suggested prep plan if you are unsure how many hours to bank before starting. Employers sometimes sponsor trainees; share their expectations when you enquire so mentoring aligns with job roles.
Harness and helmet hire is included on coached training days when you need it, and centres provide ropes and wall hardware during supervised sessions. You should still bring your own shoes because fit matters for long coaching days.
Personal chalk, tape and a logbook speed up transitions between teaching tasks. Replace worn belay devices before assessment so examiners see kit you trust.
