High Man, reached via the Slab & Notch route, is a classic scramble and climb located on Pillar Rock in the Lake District. Itinerary
The day begins with a scenic trek to Pillar Rock, a journey that sets the tone for the adventure ahead. Starting at Ennerdale Water, the approach leads you through beautiful landscapes and up to the base of the climb. Your guide will provide a thorough safety briefing before roping you in for the ascent.
The Slab & Notch route is well-known for its manageable yet enjoyable climbing features, offering secure holds and steady progress to the summit of High Man. Along the way, there will be opportunities to pause for photos or simply take in the surroundings. Once at the top, we'll celebrate your achievement before beginning the descent via a 14m abseil into the Jordan Gap. The day concludes with a return hike to the starting point.
Location
Pillar Rock is located in the remote and dramatic Ennerdale Valley. Our preferred route begins at Ennerdale Water, though we can customise the start point to suit your accommodation.
Options include Buttermere or Wasdale Head, while staying at the Black Sail or Gillerthwaite YHAs provides an excellent base for a leisurely start.
Prerequisites
This activity is suitable for individuals with at least a "Bronze-level" fitness. You'll need stamina for the 2.5-hour walk-in and the overall duration of the day, which will keep you on the move for 7–9 hours.
