High Man, reached via the Slab & Notch route, is a classic scramble and climb located on Pillar Rock in the Lake District. Known for its remoteness and historical significance, this route offers an accessible yet rewarding experience for both beginners and seasoned adventurers. With expert guidance and plenty of support, you'll enjoy a day filled with amazing scenery and a sense of accomplishment.
The day begins with a scenic trek to Pillar Rock, a journey that sets the tone for the adventure ahead. Starting at Ennerdale Water, the approach leads you through beautiful landscapes and up to the base of the climb. Your guide will provide a thorough safety briefing before roping you in for the ascent.
The Slab & Notch route is well-known for its manageable yet enjoyable climbing features, offering secure holds and steady progress to the summit of High Man. Along the way, there will be opportunities to pause for photos or simply take in the surroundings. Once at the top, we'll celebrate your achievement before beginning the descent via a 14m abseil into the Jordan Gap. The day concludes with a return hike to the starting point.
Pillar Rock is located in the remote and dramatic Ennerdale Valley. Our preferred route begins at Ennerdale Water, though we can customise the start point to suit your accommodation.
Options include Buttermere or Wasdale Head, while staying at the Black Sail or Gillerthwaite YHAs provides an excellent base for a leisurely start.
This activity is suitable for individuals with at least a "Bronze-level" fitness. You'll need stamina for the 2.5-hour walk-in and the overall duration of the day, which will keep you on the move for 7–9 hours.
Operating since 2003, the team is led by a highly qualified mountain instructor with a passion for providing enjoyable and safe outdoor experiences. Each session is designed not just for adventure but also to help participants gain confidence and practical skills they can apply to future activities.
All instructors hold top qualifications, ensuring you’re in the best hands at every stage. With a genuine focus on creating memorable and fun experiences, you’ll leave not only with a sense of achievement but also a deeper understanding of mountain safety and techniques.
The activity lasts approximately 7–9 hours, including a 2.5-hour walk to Pillar Rock, the climb via the Slab & Notch route, and the return journey.
Along the way, you’ll be guided by a professional instructor, who will provide all climbing equipment and ensure safety throughout. Expect a full day outdoors, so plan accordingly with food, water, and appropriate clothing.
No prior climbing experience is needed for this activity. The route is graded as Moderate and is suitable for beginners, with lots of stable holds and resting points.
Your guide will provide a detailed safety briefing and ensure you are supported with ropes at all times during the climb and descent.
You should have at least a “Bronze-level” fitness, meaning you’re comfortable with long walks and being active for 7–9 hours.
The initial 2.5-hour walk to the base of the climb includes uneven terrain and some elevation gain, so stamina and steady footing are important.
The default starting point is at Ennerdale Water, but arrangements can be made to start from Buttermere or Wasdale Head if these locations are more convenient for you.
If you’re staying at Black Sail or Gillerthwaite YHAs, we can adapt the plan to begin closer to these accommodations.
Groups are limited to 1–3 participants per instructor to ensure safety and personal guidance.
Larger groups can be accommodated with additional instructors, subject to availability.
