This 15-day trek takes you into the Everest region via Lukla, following the Dudh Koshi valley to Namche Bazaar before turning towards the Gokyo lakes. It’s built for trekkers who want high-altitude trekking with big mountain viewpoints and a quieter alternative to the main Everest Base Camp route.
The key objective is the climb of Gokyo Ri (5,357 m) for wide views of Everest, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and surrounding peaks, alongside time at the glacial lakes and the Ngozumpa glacier area. The itinerary includes acclimatisation in Namche and steady progression through higher, colder terrain.
After cultural time in Kathmandu, you fly to Lukla and trek up the Dudh Koshi valley to Namche Bazaar, the main Sherpa trading hub in the region. A dedicated acclimatisation day includes an optional hike towards viewpoints and nearby Sherpa villages, helping you adapt before moving into higher terrain.
From Namche, the trail branches away from the Everest Base Camp corridor towards Dole and Machhermo, climbing into a colder alpine environment with wide views and fewer settlements. You reach the Gokyo lake system and spend time exploring the lakes and surrounding ridges before a pre-dawn ascent of Gokyo Ri for a major Himalayan panorama. The return route follows the same valley back to Lukla, finishing with a final Kathmandu day that includes Durbar Square and local market areas.
This trek is in the Everest region within Sagarmatha National Park, beginning and ending with flights to and from Lukla. The route follows the Dudh Koshi valley through classic Sherpa settlements before branching into the Gokyo valley.
The Gokyo lake system sits high in a glacial landscape with the Ngozumpa glacier nearby. The combination of lakes, high viewpoints, and surrounding 8,000 m peaks makes this route one of the standout alternatives to the Everest Base Camp trail.
This is a high-altitude trek with multiple days above 4,000 m and a summit-style day hike to 5,357 m. You should have strong fitness, be comfortable walking 6–8 hours per day over consecutive days, and ideally have prior multi-day trekking experience.
Altitude management is central to this itinerary. You must be prepared for cold temperatures, basic teahouse accommodation, and the possibility of itinerary adjustments due to weather or health. Travel insurance that includes emergency helicopter evacuation is required.
This itinerary prioritises acclimatisation and steady progression, with a structured approach through Namche before moving into higher alpine terrain. The Gokyo route gives you major Himalayan viewpoints and time beside glacial lakes, while typically feeling less congested than the main Everest Base Camp corridor.
Experienced local guides, clear logistics, and included flights and permits keep the trip well organised. With a private format, pacing can be managed around your group while keeping safety and altitude response central throughout.
