Discover a calmer side of Newquay on this two-hour estuary kayak tour. With expert tuition and friendly guidance, you’ll learn essential river paddling techniques while exploring lagoons, sandbanks, and wooded banks. Perfect for families, friends, or solo paddlers, it’s a relaxed way to experience the area’s wildlife and heritage.
The tour begins with a full safety briefing and introduction to paddling basics on the banks of the estuary. You’ll be kitted out with a Rip Curl wetsuit, buoyancy aid, helmet, and paddle, with time to get comfortable before heading onto the water. After a quick warm-up, your instructor will guide you through the first strokes, making sure you feel confident with the techniques and signals.
Once afloat, you’ll follow the tide down the Gannel Estuary, a unique environment where the river meets the sea. As you paddle, you’ll pass golden sandbanks, blue lagoons, and overhanging trees while enjoying a peaceful coastal setting. Along the way, you’ll discover Penpole Creek and hear stories of the area’s fascinating history, from pirate routes to witch trials. The pace is gentle and designed to suit the whole group, with time to take in the surroundings and enjoy the experience.
Wildlife is a highlight of this tour, with regular sightings of birds such as curlews, egrets, and gulls. Keep an eye out for otters, kingfishers, and even the occasional seal. Your instructor will share insights into the area’s ecology and folklore, including the legendary sound of the Crake, said to echo across the estuary. With its mix of nature, history, and folklore, the estuary offers a side of Newquay many visitors never see.
The Gannel Estuary lies just south of Towan Headland in Newquay. Its sheltered tidal waters contrast beautifully with the lively surf beaches nearby, making it an ideal spot for kayaking. Fringed by sand dunes, salt marshes, and woodland, it’s a peaceful setting that reveals different character with each tide.
This estuary is also a place of cultural heritage, with remnants of an old quay still visible and historic ties to Cornwall’s trading past. Today, it’s popular with nature enthusiasts and those looking to enjoy the scenery in a quieter, more relaxed way. From the water, you’ll gain views of the surrounding hills and what’s locally known as “Millionaire’s Row,” with homes overlooking the lagoons and sandbanks.
No previous kayaking experience is necessary. The tour is suitable for beginners as well as those who have tried paddling before. Your instructor will provide all the guidance and support you need.
Participants should be comfortable in water and prepared for light physical activity. The pace is steady, with plenty of breaks, making it accessible to most people aged 8 and above.
The centre is run by a team of qualified instructors who know the Gannel Estuary inside out. They combine professional safety standards with a friendly approach, making sure each session is relaxed, fun, and informative. Whether you’re keen to improve your paddling or simply want to enjoy time on the water, you’ll be in safe hands.
With top-quality equipment, heated changing facilities, and thoughtful extras such as free photography, everything is designed to make your experience easy and enjoyable. The team has been recognised with awards for excellence, and their focus on creating memorable outdoor adventures ensures you’ll leave with new skills, local knowledge, and great memories.
Children under 8 are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.
There’s much more to kayaking than simply paddling in a straight line from start to finish. Your session can include much, much more! Learning advanced paddling techniques. Fun games and races. Exploring smugglers caves. Getting up close with wildlife in the natural environment, especially the local Seal population and possibly dolphins. Navigating narrow gullies and riding the natural rapids created by the ocean swell. Learning about local history and points of interest. Watching our coasteering groups as they jump off cliffs is also a great spectator sport!
What better activity to do in the rain than a water activity? Rain or shine our kayak sessions are the ultimate activity for the family.
As you will be undertaking your session in one of our sit-on-top kayaks, falling in pretty unlikely, and even if it does happen, it is not a problem. You can just flip the kayak upright and climb back in. One of our qualified instructors will be on hand to make sure that you are ok and give you any assistance needed.
We can provide a wetsuit so you only need to bring a towel and swimwear. You can wear your own wetsuit if you have one or if you have your own kayak specific waterproofs you may bring these too. Footwear will also be required so bring either a pair of shoes that you don’t mind getting wet or you can hire from us for £3 a go. Most importantly please bring a sense of adventure and fun!
Your trip will take you on one of a couple of different routes that we use. The main route is along the Gazzle which is a large headland just a short paddle from our centre. Alternatively, we will take you along a sheltered stretch of river located a short drive from the centre. We are happy for you to let us know your preference, and we will use the conditions on the day to help us decide.
Our ocean-based route along Towan headland is rich in wildlife. Common sightings include Grey Seals, and an array of birdlife. There is also the possibility to see Dolphins, Sun Fish, Lion’s mane jellyfish, and Basking Sharks have previously been spotted in the area (don’t worry, they are completely harmless and have no teeth). Our river-based route in the Gannel estuary is very in rich in Birdlife including Herrings, Iceland and Franklin Gulls.
Providing you have fulfilled the minimum requirement of 50 metres swimming capability and you have no current health issues or injuries preventing you from participating in an adventurous activities you are welcome to come! Don’t worry, it’s not a race and you are not expected to be an Olympic-level paddler! Your instructor will make sure the group moves at the pace of the slowest paddler and will assist weak paddlers when needed.
