Team up for a fun and active adventure with the Family GPS Challenge—an off-road treasure hunt with a twist. Working together in a Land Rover Discovery TD5, you’ll use handheld GPS units to navigate, complete location-based tasks, and solve challenges as a group. With space for up to six participants and a mix of driving, walking, and brain-teasers, it’s a great way to spend a few hours outdoors.
Your session starts with a short briefing where you’ll be given a Garmin handheld GPS unit and introduced to the rules of the challenge. Working as a team, you'll navigate the 40-acre site, locating both your vehicle and various hidden items or checkpoints. The driving is done by the adults in the group, taking you between locations across woodland tracks, grassy clearings, and bumpy off-road terrain.
At each checkpoint, you’ll be set a mission—these might involve physical tasks like mini obstacle challenges, mental puzzles, or answering quirky quiz questions. Some sections of the challenge require getting out and exploring on foot, so bring comfortable clothes and sturdy footwear. Children aged 6 and above can take part either with their families or in groups of friends (without adults in the vehicle), making it flexible and inclusive.
Set in private woodland near Farnsfield in Nottinghamshire, the challenge makes full use of a 40-acre off-road site that mixes terrain types to keep things exciting. From shaded woodland trails to open grassy patches, the area offers plenty of space for navigating, completing challenges, and enjoying a bit of friendly competition.
The site is located just off the A617 heading towards Newark, around 200 yards on the left after the A614 roundabout. The postcode NG22 8BP will bring you close, though sat navs can occasionally miss the entrance—watch out for signs and follow the final approach carefully. Parking and check-in are clearly marked.
All participants must be at least 6 years old. For safety, adults are required to drive the vehicle unless the group is made up entirely of children aged 6+—in which case the experience can be run without an adult driver present in the car. GPS use and instruction are explained clearly at the start, so no prior experience is needed.
It’s recommended to wear sturdy footwear and clothing suitable for uneven ground and woodland paths. A portion of the challenge will be completed on foot, so a basic level of mobility is important.
The Family GPS Challenge stands out as a proper shared activity—engaging, slightly competitive, and a lot of fun for both kids and adults. It’s more than just a drive; it’s an active experience that blends technology, teamwork, and outdoor adventure into one well-paced session.
Run by experienced staff and using BORDA-approved vehicles and equipment, the session is managed safely and flexibly to suit different group types. Whether you’re planning a birthday activity, family day out, or just looking for something new to do together, this challenge offers a hands-on way to enjoy the outdoors.
