Spend a full day learning to drive off-road with expert guidance and hands-on time behind the wheel of a Land Rover Discovery TD5. This practical 4x4 training course includes both a classroom-based session and real off-road driving tailored to typical UK terrain. Ideal for personal skill-building, it’s a great introduction to the techniques and systems behind successful 4x4 driving.
Training begins indoors with a focused classroom session covering everything from vehicle setup to the core functions of 4WD systems. Your instructor will walk you through safe off-road techniques, explaining how to approach typical UK off-road conditions like wet grass, mud, gravel, and slopes. Expect to spend between one and two hours on theory, depending on the questions and prior experience of those attending.
Once you’ve covered the key concepts, you’ll head out onto our woodland course to apply what you’ve learnt. You’ll be in the driving seat of one of our Land Rover Discovery TD5s, tackling varied terrain including muddy sections, water crossings, and steep gradients. The instructor will be alongside to offer feedback and support as you build your confidence and skill throughout the day. A 30-minute break for lunch is included, though food is not provided.

Located just off the A617 towards Newark, the site is easy to reach by car, though sat nav systems may not always find the exact spot. After the A614 roundabout, the entrance is approximately 200 yards on the left side of the A617. Clear signage and staff are on hand to direct you on arrival.
Participants must hold a full UK driving licence and be at least 18 years old. Previous off-road experience is not necessary, as the course is designed to teach beginners and those new to 4x4 driving.
Wearing comfortable clothes and footwear suitable for outdoor activity is recommended, as you’ll be spending much of the day outdoors and in the vehicle. Please bring your own lunch or refreshments for the break.
The training is delivered by a BORDA-trained instructor with extensive experience in 4x4 techniques, offering personalised coaching tailored to your skill level. The course balances theory and practical driving to ensure you gain a thorough understanding and hands-on ability.
Sessions run in small groups of up to three, ensuring individual attention and plenty of driving time. The private woodland setting provides a safe but challenging environment designed specifically for off-road learning in UK conditions.

Please note that sat navs don’t always take you to the exact entrance, so it’s a good idea to double-check the directions beforehand. We suggest allowing a bit of extra time to ensure you arrive on schedule and don’t miss any of your session time.
The course begins with a classroom session where you’ll learn about vehicle preparation, the workings of 4-wheel drive systems, and essential off-road driving techniques suitable for typical UK conditions. This theory section lasts between one and two hours and lays the foundation for your practical training.

Yes, all participants must hold a full driving licence valid in the UK. This is essential as the course involves driving on private off-road terrain using a vehicle on public roads to access the site.
If you do not hold a full licence, you won’t be able to take part in the driving elements of the course. Passengers are not permitted on this training as it is focused on developing individual driving skills.
The full day runs for approximately six hours, including a 30-minute break for lunch. During this time, you’ll get a blend of classroom theory and practical driving, ensuring a balanced learning experience.
Lunch is not provided, so you’ll need to bring your own food and refreshments. The schedule is designed to maximise driving time while allowing a break to rest and recharge.
The off-road driving takes place on a private woodland course featuring a variety of surfaces such as muddy tracks, gravel, slopes, and water crossings. These conditions reflect the types of challenges you might encounter on UK off-road routes.
The course is designed to be safe yet challenging enough to teach you essential vehicle control and off-road techniques. Each section offers a different test of your skills, from managing inclines to navigating slippery patches.
Spectators are welcome to attend, but it’s best to check in advance to confirm if there is space available at the site. The woodland location has limited parking and viewing areas, so it may not always be suitable for large groups.
While friends and family can support you, only registered participants are allowed on the driving course itself. Safety is paramount, so all attendees must follow instructions and remain in designated areas.
Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing is recommended, ideally clothes that can get dirty or muddy. Footwear should be sturdy with good grip to handle the outdoor environment and vehicle ingress/egress safely.
Layers work well due to variable UK weather, and waterproof jackets are advisable. No specialised equipment is needed as the vehicle and safety gear are provided.
This is a non-certificated course designed purely for skill development and personal improvement. If you require formal certification for work or professional purposes, you would need to enrol on one of the BORDA Basic, Standard, or Higher-level accredited courses instead.
The focus here is on practical ability and understanding, with the instructor providing feedback to help you build confidence rather than issuing official qualifications.
The course uses Land Rover Discovery TD5s which are available in both manual and automatic versions. You can express your preference when booking, though availability is subject to demand and may not always be guaranteed.
Your instructor will assist you in handling whichever vehicle you use, ensuring you are comfortable and confident regardless of transmission type.
