Royal William Yard is one of Britain's great historic waterfronts, and the most memorable way to reach it is by sea aboard Bounty. This afternoon blends genuine sailing across Plymouth Sound with time ashore for lunch, coffee or a drink before we carry you home to Mount Batten.
After a safety briefing at Mount Batten we cast off across Plymouth Sound National Marine Park with Conrad Humphreys or a member of the crew at the helm. Bounty is the replica launch from Channel 4's Mutiny, and as we cruise and circle Drake's Island you watch one of the UK's most impressive historic waterfronts open up from the sea. With only seven guests on board the crossing stays personal: take the helm, trim the sails, or sit on deck with the Hoe and the forts in the wider view while Conrad shares stories from maritime history and his own round-the-world miles.
We tie up at Royal William Yard so you can step ashore among the grand stone buildings for lunch, coffee or a drink at your own pace, then rejoin us for the sail home across the Sound. The whole adventure is about 3.5 hours of genuine sailing with a relaxed pause on the waterfront built in, not squeezed in at the end. Routes flex with tide, but the rhythm stays the same: brief, board, sail out, savour the Yard, sail back.
On the return leg you get another chance to steer or simply watch the city skyline and open water while seabirds and occasional dolphins pass by. Spinlock lifejackets are fitted on the pontoon before we leave, and Conrad keeps the group small so everyone who wants a turn at the helm gets one.
Mount Batten sits inside Plymouth Sound National Marine Park, where Drake's Island, the Royal Citadel and centuries of naval history frame every mile. Royal William Yard lies across the water from us, so arriving by boat is the memorable way to step ashore: you have already crossed a marine park home to more than a thousand species and hundreds of historic wrecks before your feet touch the quay.
Our boat club is on the south-west coast path at Mount Batten, with free parking at the centre about 50 metres from Mount Batten Watersports Centre. From there we work along the Sound toward the Yard, with the city skyline and open water in turn as we go.
No sailing background is needed for this trip. Conrad and the crew look after Bounty while you steer if you fancy it, help with the sails, or simply enjoy the crossing. We fit every guest with a Spinlock lifejacket on the pontoon before departure so the start of the day feels calm and unhurried.
Children under 16 sail with a parent or guardian, and we carry lifejackets for ages 8 to 16. We cannot take infants on board. If you have accessibility or mobility questions, tell us when you book and we will plan boarding and the time ashore with you.
Arriving at Royal William Yard by boat is the whole point of this experience, and Bounty makes it feel like a real voyage rather than a quick ferry hop. Conrad skippered Channel 4's Mutiny in this very craft, retracing Bligh's 3,600-mile survival journey, and he brings that same warmth and storytelling to a short afternoon on Plymouth Sound.
We cap the group at seven guests plus crew, Bounty is MCA Category 4 licensed, and every sailor wears a Spinlock Deckvest trusted on the world's toughest offshore races. Guests often say Conrad shows you the ropes and helps you get stuck in; that hands-on, small-boat spirit is the heart of what we do.
We depart from the Mount Batten Centre in Plymouth, with free parking on site. Exact directions and a what3words location are sent to you ahead of your trip. Please arrive in good time before departure for your safety briefing and lifejacket fitting.
Look for the grey container on the south-west coast path by the northern slipway, about 50m from Mount Batten Watersports Centre. Free parking on site: register your vehicle on arrival.
None at all. Conrad and the crew handle the navigation while you take the helm, raise the sails or simply relax on deck. First-time sailors are very welcome on this Royal William Yard voyage.
You will get a safety briefing and Spinlock lifejacket fitting before we leave the pontoon, and the crew stays with you throughout your time on Plymouth Sound.
Safety comes first on every voyage. If we need to postpone for any reason, we will contact you as soon as we can and offer another date that suits you.
If a revised date does not work, we will refund you in full. Our crew stays in touch through Adventuro chat or by phone so you are never left guessing on the morning of your trip.
Pack warm layers, soft-soled shoes such as trainers, a sun hat, sun cream, a water bottle and snacks for time on the water.

We meet at Bounty & Hope Boat Club on the Mount Batten waterfront, about 50 metres from Mount Batten Watersports Centre on the south-west coast path. Use What3Words ///safe.cloud.detail for the exact pontoon.

About the centre
Mount Batten, Plymouth
After 25 years of offshore racing and three trips round the world, Conrad Humphreys founded Bounty & Hope to offer premium sailing aboard Bounty, the replica launch from Channel 4's Mutiny, from Mount Batten inside Plymouth Sound National Marine Park. Guests crew a small boat on open water, swap screens for sea air, and explore Drake's Island, the Tamar and Lynher rivers, and Cornwall's coast on hands-on voyages.
Conrad literally shows you the ropes and helps you get stuck in, as guest Josh Hoole put it. We sail where more than 1,000 marine species and historic wrecks lie under the keel, with Mount Edgcumbe, Royal William Yard and the Hoe on the horizon. Bounty is MCA Category 4 licensed for up to seven guests; Hope carries four. Two Red Paddleboards can be hired on selected experiences.
