Take part in a guided group hike through the scenic Borrowdale Valley, following the well-known 10-mile route around Derwent Water. This adventure includes a mix of forest trails, lakeside paths, and an ascent of the famous Catbells, offering a varied and rewarding day out. Along the way, you’ll take in impressive views and pass key landmarks such as Lodore Falls.
The hike begins in Keswick, where you’ll meet your guide and group before setting off along the shores of Derwent Water. The initial stretch follows well-maintained lakeside paths, passing through woodland and offering great views across the water. After heading south towards Lodore Falls, there will be a short stop to enjoy the waterfall before continuing along the route.
The highlight of the hike is the ascent of Catbells, a well-loved fell that offers some of the best views in the area. The climb is steep in places but manageable for most with a reasonable level of fitness. From the summit, you’ll get a panoramic look at the surrounding fells and valleys before beginning the descent. The return leg of the route takes you along the western side of Derwent Water, following undulating terrain back to Keswick. Throughout the hike, there will be plenty of opportunities to pause, take in the surroundings, and learn more about the landscape from your guide.
Derwent Water is situated in the northern Lake District, just south of Keswick. Known as the ‘Queen of the Lakes,’ it is surrounded by dramatic fells and peaceful woodlands, making it a favourite for walkers and nature lovers.
The Borrowdale Valley to the south offers a mix of waterfalls, crags, and historic routes, adding to the appeal of this circular hike. With easy access from Keswick and good public transport links, it’s an ideal spot for a day of walking.
A reasonable level of fitness is needed, as the route covers 10 miles with some steep ascents and descents. Previous hiking experience is beneficial but not essential.
If you have any medical conditions that may affect your ability to complete the hike, please inform the guide in advance.
