The initial stretch follows well-maintained lakeside paths, passing through woodland and offering great views across the water. After heading south towards Lodore Falls, there will be a short stop to enjoy the waterfall before continuing along the route. The highlight of the hike is the ascent of Catbells, a well-loved fell that offers some of the best views in the area. The climb is steep in places but manageable for most with a reasonable level of fitness. From the summit, you’ll get a panoramic look at the surrounding fells and valleys before beginning the descent. The return leg of the route takes you along the western side of Derwent Water, following undulating terrain back to Keswick. Throughout the hike, there will be plenty of opportunities to pause, take in the surroundings, and learn more about the landscape from your guide. Location Derwent Water is situated in the northern Lake District, just south of Keswick. Known as the ‘Queen of the Lakes,’ it is surrounded by dramatic fells and peaceful woodlands, making it a favourite for walkers and nature lovers. The Borrowdale Valley to the south offers a mix of waterfalls, crags, and historic routes, adding to the appeal of this circular hike. With easy access from Keswick and good public transport links, it’s an ideal spot for a day of walking. Prerequisites A reasonable level of fitness is needed, as the route covers 10 miles with some steep ascents and descents. Previous hiking experience is beneficial but not essential. ## FAQs

### Can individuals attend alone?

Yes! The majority of participants join as solo hikers and adventurers. The experiences are designed to bring like-minded people together, creating a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Whether it’s a first-time outdoor activity or a new challenge, there’s no need to feel apprehensive—everyone is there to enjoy the experience.

### Is there an age limit?

There is no upper age limit, as long as participants are physically able to take part safely. Some challenge walks and day experiences do allow under-18s, but they must be accompanied at all times by a parent or guardian, as there is no AALA Licence held. For enquiries about under-18 participation, please get in touch via the adventuro chat below. They'll be happy to help!

### What happens if the weather is bad?

Weather conditions are closely monitored using mountain-specific forecasts. If dangerous conditions are predicted, updates will be provided by 4pm the day before the event, or as early as possible within 24 hours. As the Lake District’s weather can change rapidly, events will still proceed in rain. If conditions worsen on the day, the guide may adjust the route or, if necessary, cancel the event. In the case of cancellation, an alternative date will be offered.

### What level of fitness is required?

A basic level of fitness is needed to manage being on foot for over six hours across potentially uneven terrain. Many participants book a guide due to limited hillwalking experience, so there is no expectation to be highly hill-fit. Before taking part, a medical waiver must be completed to acknowledge the risks associated with outdoor activities.

### Are dogs allowed?

Unfortunately, dogs are not permitted on this particular hike, as the terrain can be challenging in places and may not be suitable for all dogs. If you’re looking to bring your dog on a different adventure, please get in touch, and we can suggest other dog-friendly hikes.

### What kit do I need?

You'll need to bring some essential kit to ensure you're comfortable and prepared. Compulsory items include a waterproof jacket and trousers, walking boots with suitable socks, a rucksack, warm layers, a fleece or jumper, and a hat and gloves (waterproof ones are best). You'll also need to bring food, plenty of fluids, a mobile phone, and any personal medication. Recommended extras include walking poles, sun cream, midge spray, gaiters, and a sit mat for added comfort.

### Are there toilet facilities at the start and along the route?

There are toilet facilities at the meeting point in Keswick, but we can't guarantee their availability or opening times. There are no toilets along the route, so it’s advisable to use the facilities before the hike begins. Please ensure you’re prepared for this aspect of the hike.
