A structured 50-minute surf session gives young learners aged 7–16 the chance to practise balance, trimming, and turning under the guidance of a dedicated helper. Waves range from Cruiser to Turns, providing a safe yet challenging environment for skill progression. The session combines fun, confidence-building, and focused coaching to create a supportive, engaging experience.
Activities begin with a dynamic warm-up to prepare the body and introduce safety protocols for both child and helper. Coaches guide children through initial wave entries, basic trimming, and balance drills, establishing a strong foundation for the session. Helpers assist closely, offering stability and support so participants can focus on technique.
As the lesson progresses, children tackle Turns waves, practising linked turns, carving, and maintaining flow across the board. Instruction is personalised, with coaches observing continuously to provide real-time feedback on stance, weight distribution, and timing. By the end, children gain confidence, improved coordination, and the ability to ride multiple waves successfully, all while enjoying a lively, structured session.
The wave pool in Newbridge, Edinburgh, is situated within a 60-acre country park, offering a secure and inspiring environment for young surfers. The inland wave lagoon generates thousands of waves per hour, creating consistent conditions that support repetition and skill development.
Facilities include indoor heated changing rooms, accessible toilets, and a plant-based wetsuit fleet designed for comfort and warmth. Outdoor terraces and observation areas allow helpers, family, and friends to watch safely, adding a supportive atmosphere without disrupting the session.
Children must be comfortable in water with a dedicated helper. Safety guidance is provided to both child and helper before the session.
All equipment, including surfboards and wetsuits, is provided. Children should wear swimwear underneath and bring a towel. Some mobility on the board and basic water confidence are required.
Instruction emphasises skill progression, confidence building, and safe exploration of more challenging waves. Helpers are integrated into every stage, enabling children to push themselves safely under expert supervision.
The facility combines advanced wave technology, spacious park surroundings, and authentic Scottish hospitality. Children benefit from consistent wave conditions and structured coaching, while helpers and families feel fully supported throughout the experience.
Changing facilities are available close to where this session is based, providing a warm place to get ready before heading out and somewhere comfortable to warm up afterwards. These areas are designed to be spacious and easy to use, especially for families or anyone managing young children or extra kit.
You’ll find indoor changing rooms with showers, lockers, and amenities such as hair dryers. Everything is arranged so you can store your valuables securely and rinse off after the water without needing to rush.
When this session is running, qualified lifeguards are on duty to monitor the water and keep everyone safe. They work alongside trained surf instructors who handle both the coaching environment and water-based supervision.
Their training covers a wide range of rescue and first-aid skills, ensuring you’re taking part in an activity overseen by professionals who can respond quickly to changing conditions. This gives you the reassurance of having expert support throughout your time in the water.
Wetsuits and accessories suitable for local water conditions are provided as part of this session, including additional items like boots, gloves, or a hood when needed. Boards are also supplied so you don’t need to purchase or carry your own equipment unless you want to.
You’re welcome to bring your own wetsuit if you prefer using personal kit, and the team can check it fits the conditions on the day. Bringing a familiar wetsuit can be helpful for regular surfers wanting a consistent feel in the water.
Local water temperatures can vary, and cooler days are always possible. To keep you comfortable, the centre provides thick wetsuits and thermal accessories designed to retain heat during longer sessions.
Even on cold days, these wetsuits offer consistent warmth so you can focus on your time in the waves. Staff will help ensure you’re dressed appropriately before you start.
There is a café, bar, or restaurant near the activity area where you can order food and drinks before or after this session. Seating is available inside, with some spots offering views of the water so you can watch others surf.
Takeaway options are usually available as well, making it easy to grab something quickly between activities. Staff at the venue can guide you through ordering, dietary information, and seating availability.
Helpers guide entry and exit, maintain stability, and provide subtle cues to keep children balanced. Coaches ensure helpers are trained to offer safe, effective support.
Support extends to positioning and timing on the wave, gradually allowing more independence while maintaining safety.
While some comfort in water helps, the session is suitable for those with limited surf experience. Helpers make the session accessible for first-timers on green waves.
Coaches adapt instructions to suit each child, focusing on enjoyment, safety, and progression.
Helpers are trained to provide hands-on support. Coaches monitor the session continuously, adjusting guidance to conditions and ability.
Accessible facilities and indoor changing rooms make preparation and participation comfortable for all.
