Take your first steps into the world of canyoning with a practical three-day training course in the canyons of Granada. Combining technical skills, safety procedures, and hands-on experience, this course is designed to help participants develop confidence while learning the foundations of one of the most rewarding adventure sports in nature.
Training takes place across three days in a variety of canyon environments around the Ótivar area. The course focuses heavily on practical learning, allowing participants to develop skills through real canyon situations while being supported by experienced instructors.
Day 1 – Green River Canyon
The first day introduces the fundamental skills required for canyoning. Participants learn progression techniques including downclimbing, jumping, sliding, swimming, and moving through flowing water. Training also covers different abseiling methods, rope handling, figure-eight descenders, rope retrieval systems, anchor setups, and introductory releasable systems.
Day 2 – Guardajamas River
Building on the previous day's learning, participants begin applying techniques in a more varied canyon environment. The focus shifts towards rope manoeuvres, knot passing, retrievable systems, and introductory rope access techniques while continuing to improve confidence moving through canyon terrain.
Day 3 – Lentegí River
The final day brings together the skills developed throughout the course in a fun water canyon environment. Participants practise techniques under instructor supervision, reinforce key safety concepts, and gain further experience navigating natural obstacles before concluding the programme with a final review and feedback session.
Programme content may be adapted to suit weather conditions, water levels, and the experience level of the group.
The course takes place in several canyons around Ótivar in Granada Province, an area well known for its dramatic gorges, clear water, and varied canyoning routes. The combination of technical sections and natural beauty makes it an ideal environment for learning.
Situated between the Sierra Nevada mountains and the Mediterranean coastline, the region offers a mixture of river canyons, rocky landscapes, and secluded natural settings. These diverse environments provide excellent opportunities to develop practical canyoning skills in real conditions.
No previous canyoning experience is required. The course has been specifically designed as an introduction to the activity and welcomes complete beginners who would like to learn in a structured environment.
Participants must be at least 18 years old, able to swim, and comfortable taking part in physically active outdoor sessions. A reasonable level of fitness will help ensure you get the most from the experience.
Practical learning forms the heart of the course, with participants spending the majority of their time developing skills directly within canyon environments rather than solely in a classroom setting. This hands-on approach helps build confidence and understanding more effectively.
Years of experience delivering adventure activities throughout Andalusia allow the instructors to create a supportive learning environment while maintaining high safety standards. Small groups and personalised coaching help ensure every participant progresses at their own pace.
Yes. The programme has been specifically designed as an introductory course and no previous canyoning experience is required. Training begins with the basics before gradually progressing towards more technical skills.
Participants learn in a structured environment with professional supervision throughout. The focus is on building confidence and understanding rather than expecting prior knowledge.
The course covers a wide range of essential canyoning skills including abseiling, rope handling, self-belaying, anchor systems, knot work, canyon progression, and water movement awareness.
Participants also learn how to safely navigate natural canyon features such as jumps, slides, pools, and flowing water sections commonly encountered during canyoning trips.
The majority of the programme takes place outdoors in real canyon environments. Practical learning is prioritised so participants can apply techniques directly rather than simply learning about them in theory.
Each day introduces new challenges and opportunities to practise skills under instructor supervision, helping participants develop confidence through experience.
Yes. Participants must be able to swim comfortably as canyoning involves moving through pools, rivers, and water-filled sections of canyon environments.
Although flotation equipment may be used when appropriate, confidence in the water remains an important requirement for safe participation.
Thermal clothing suitable for wearing beneath a wetsuit is recommended, particularly during cooler conditions or longer sessions in the water.
Participants should also bring secure footwear with good grip, suitable outdoor clothing, and any personal items needed for full days of outdoor activity.
The course involves walking, scrambling, swimming, climbing, and abseiling. While specialist fitness levels are not required, participants should expect three active days outdoors.
A reasonable level of fitness will make the experience more enjoyable and allow participants to take full advantage of the practical training opportunities available.
The course provides an excellent foundation and introduces participants to many of the key skills used in canyoning. However, further experience and additional training are recommended before undertaking independent canyon descents.
The instructors place strong emphasis on continued learning and progression, helping participants understand the importance of building experience over time.
