Develop the practical rescue skills required to operate safely in whitewater environments through internationally recognised Rescue 3 Europe training. Designed for guides, instructors, rescue personnel, and adventure professionals, these courses combine classroom learning with realistic river-based scenarios to build confidence, leadership, and decision-making skills under pressure.
Whitewater Rescue Technician (WRT – PRO)
Designed for river professionals and those working in aquatic environments, the WRT-PRO course runs over 3 days and includes an overnight or low-visibility rescue exercise. Participants develop core rescue skills including hydrology, risk assessment, incident management, emergency communication, rescue planning, rope systems, river crossings, boat recovery, whitewater swimming, and full rescue scenarios. Practical training takes place directly in moving water environments, ensuring techniques can be applied in real situations.
This course is suitable for rafting guides, kayaking instructors, canyoning professionals, expedition leaders, and rescue personnel who need a recognised foundation in whitewater rescue. Successful participants receive Rescue 3 Europe certification, which remains valid for three years.
Whitewater Rescue Technician Advanced (WRTA)
The WRTA course represents the next stage of professional development and is intended for those who already hold a valid WRT-PRO qualification. Delivered over 4 days and including a night search exercise, the programme focuses on complex rescue situations, advanced leadership skills, technical rope systems, vertical rescue, victim extraction, and managing incidents in challenging environments.
Training places a strong emphasis on problem-solving, team coordination, and handling high-risk scenarios where multiple rescue techniques may be required. The course is ideal for experienced professionals looking to expand their rescue capabilities and progress towards more advanced operational roles.
Instruction takes place in Benamejí, one of Andalusia's leading destinations for whitewater activities and rescue training. The surrounding sections of the Genil River provide varied river features and realistic environments for practical rescue exercises.
Located within the Subbética region of Córdoba, the area offers access to flowing water, technical rescue locations, and natural environments suitable for scenario-based learning. These conditions help create training situations that closely reflect real operational incidents.
Participants on the WRT-PRO course must be at least 18 years old, confident swimmers, and have previous experience in aquatic activities. A reasonable level of fitness is required due to the physical nature of rescue training.
For the WRTA programme, participants must already hold a valid Whitewater Rescue Technician certification before attending. Prior rescue knowledge is essential as the course builds upon techniques learned at the previous level.
Supported by internationally recognised Rescue 3 Europe standards, these courses focus on developing practical rescue skills that can be applied immediately in professional environments. Training is delivered through realistic exercises rather than classroom theory alone, helping participants gain valuable experience in dynamic river conditions.
Years of experience working in whitewater environments across Europe and beyond have helped shape a programme that balances technical competence with sound decision-making. The result is training that prepares participants for the realities of river-based rescue operations.
WRT-PRO is the foundation-level professional rescue course and provides the core knowledge required for working safely in whitewater environments. It focuses on rescue techniques, risk management, rescue planning, and practical river-based skills.
WRTA is an advanced programme designed for those who have already completed WRT-PRO. It introduces more complex rescue situations, advanced rope systems, leadership challenges, and technical rescue scenarios requiring greater experience and decision-making ability.
These programmes are primarily aimed at rafting guides, kayaking instructors, canyoning guides, rescue personnel, expedition leaders, and outdoor professionals working around moving water.
The skills taught are particularly valuable for those responsible for managing risk and responding to incidents in river environments where specialist rescue knowledge is required.
Yes. Both courses follow Rescue 3 Europe standards, which are widely recognised throughout the rescue and outdoor industry.
The certification demonstrates that participants have completed structured training based on internationally accepted rescue principles and methodologies.
Rescue 3 certifications remain valid for three years from the date of successful completion.
Before expiry, participants can maintain their certification through recertification training or by progressing onto advanced Rescue 3 programmes where appropriate.
A significant portion of both courses takes place on the river. Participants regularly apply rescue techniques in realistic scenarios rather than learning solely through classroom presentations.
This practical approach helps develop confidence and ensures techniques can be performed effectively under real-world conditions.
Training covers whitewater swimming, rope throwing, rescue planning, risk assessment, incident management, rescue communications, technical rope systems, river crossings, and rescue scenarios.
Advanced participants additionally work on complex rescues, vertical extraction techniques, advanced rope systems, leadership challenges, and high-risk incident management.
Participants must provide their own mandatory personal rescue equipment, including appropriate clothing, rescue PPE, and technical items specified by the course requirements.
Advanced participants will also require additional equipment such as climbing helmets, harnesses, and specialised rope rescue components used during technical rescue exercises.
