Calabaceira Valley is a green half day from Praia, with sugar cane, mango, cassava and banana along an accessible trail. Your guide then leads you into Cidade Velha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hotel collection and drop-off in Praia sit around the four hours.
The drive from your Praia hotel heads toward the volcanic valley of Calabaceira, where small farms fill the floor. First-timers and families can pause at the giant baobab mentioned by Charles Darwin and talk with farmers among the plots rather than scrambling on rock. Shade from the valley greenery helps on warmer days as the path works toward the coast.
Cidade Velha was the first European city built in sub-Saharan Africa. The old-town walk covers the seventeenth-century São Francisco Convent, Rua de Banana, the 1512 marble Pillory, the ruins of the first Portuguese cathedral in Africa, and the Royal Fortress of São Filipe, raised in 1587 against pirate raids. Bring the fortress entrance fee. After the walls, the vehicle returns you to your hotel in Praia.
Inland from Praia, Calabaceira sits in a volcanic valley of cane, fruit trees and cassava. The path stays straightforward, so time goes on crops and conversation rather than steep rock. The giant baobab is an easy landmark along the way.
West of Praia, Cidade Velha's streets, fortress and convent sit above the harbour that once handled transatlantic trade. Walking from the valley into the old town links living farmland with the island's earliest colonial history in a single half day.
Walking shoes matter more than speed on this easy, accessible trail. Children aged 6 and over can join when they can stay on their feet for a few hours on uneven ground. Atlantic sun is part of the morning, so a hat and water help.
Bring sunscreen and the entrance fee for São Filipe Fortress as well. A slower pace is fine; the group stays together. The maximum of 40 still leaves room for a shared group or a private departure depending on the rate you book.
Guides who lead this route regularly know the farmers, the baobab story and the old town's layers, from the slave market at the Pillory to the pirate attacks the fortress was built to stop. When the fortress visit ends, we return you to your hotel in Praia, so you do not need a taxi from Cidade Velha.
The half day balances a green valley walk with a guided visit to a UNESCO site. You leave with both a feel for rural Santiago and a clear picture of Cidade Velha.
Hotel pickup in Praia is included, so you do not need to find a trailhead or hire a taxi for the start. We collect you from your accommodation, drive toward Calabaceira Valley, and return you to the same hotel after the fortress visit.
Share your hotel name when you book so the driver can plan the round. If you are staying outside the usual Praia pickup area, write to us before the day so we can confirm whether collection still works for your address.
The trail is easy and accessible for any hiker who can walk for a few hours on uneven ground. You move through farmland rather than steep ridgelines, and the pace is set so the group can pause at the baobab and talk with farmers along the plots.
It is still a real outdoor walk in Atlantic sun, so decent footwear, a hat and water make the morning more comfortable. Children aged 6 and over can join when they are happy to stay on their feet for the valley section and the old town streets.
Your guide walks you through the São Francisco Convent, built in the mid seventeenth century as a place of worship and formation, and along Rua de Banana, the first urbanised street the Portuguese laid out in sub-Saharan Africa. You also stop at the marble Pillory from 1512, once used as a slave market, and at the ruins of Sé Catedral, the first cathedral the Portuguese built in Africa.
The visit finishes at the Royal Fortress of São Filipe, raised in 1587 to defend the city from pirate raids. From the walls you look over the old town while your guide explains how the defence system worked. Please bring the entrance fee for the fortress, as that ticket is not part of the tour price.
Yes. Collection from your accommodation in Praia and drop-off at the same place are part of the tour. The drive out to Calabaceira and the return after Cidade Velha are handled by the same team, so you can leave bags you do not need at the hotel.
Flights and any ferry or flight between islands to reach Praia stay your responsibility. Once you are checked in at a Praia hotel, we take care of the road transfers for this half day.
Pack decent footwear, a hat, sunscreen and enough water for a few hours outdoors. The valley can feel warm even when the trail is gentle, and there is little shelter once you leave the farm plots for the old town streets.
You also need the entrance fee for São Filipe Fortress. A light layer and a small snack are useful if you like to nibble between the baobab and the convent, though food is not supplied on this itinerary.
Children aged 6 and over are welcome when they can walk the valley trail and the streets of Cidade Velha without needing to be carried for long stretches. The route is simple and accessible, which makes it a better family option than the steeper island ridges.
Shared and private rates may price adults and children differently at checkout. Check the booking calendar for the child rate on your date, and tell us ages in advance if you are unsure whether the pace will suit your group.
Groups run from a single guest up to 40 people, depending on the date and whether you book the shared group tour or a private departure. Your guide stays with you for the valley and the old town, so even on a busier morning you still hear the stories at each stop.
If you want the path more to yourselves, look for the private tour rate when you book. Shared departures are the usual way to join if you are a couple or a small family happy to walk with others.
Lunch is not part of this half-day itinerary. You return to Praia after the fortress, so you can eat at your hotel or in town once we drop you off. Bring water and a small snack if you prefer not to wait until the afternoon.
The walk passes working farms of sugar cane, mango, cassava and banana, and you may meet farmers among the plots, but that is a chance to see daily work rather than a sit-down meal. Plan your own food around the four-hour window.
The valley walk is only mildly affected by everyday Atlantic cloud or a light shower, and the old town streets remain walkable in those conditions. Your guide still covers the baobab, the farms and the historic stops unless the road or trail is unsafe.
Heavier rain or a rare storm can slow the drive from Praia or make the path slippery. We will contact you if the departure has to move. Wear shoes with grip so a damp morning does not cut the day short.
We charge a cancellation fee of 100% if you cancel 2 days or less before the valley and old-town walk. The fee is 50% when you cancel 6 days or less before, and 0% if you cancel up to 1000 days before the event.
Let us know as early as you can if you need to change the date, hotel or headcount so pickup from Praia can be updated.
