Experience the Venetian Lagoon from a completely different perspective as you paddle through peaceful waterways, colourful islands and protected wetlands. Combining gentle kayaking with local history and nature, this guided eco-tour takes you beyond Venice's busiest sights to discover the quieter side of the lagoon.
Travel by vaporetto to Sant'Erasmo before setting off by kayak across the northern Venetian Lagoon. Paddle through peaceful saltmarshes rich in birdlife, visit the colourful island of Burano, enjoy time to explore its picturesque streets and traditional treats, and continue towards the secluded island of San Francesco del Deserto before returning across one of Europe's most unique lagoon landscapes.
This experience takes place in the northern Venetian Lagoon, beginning in Venice before travelling to Sant'Erasmo by public vaporetto. Unlike the city's famous canals, this area is characterised by open water, saltmarshes, small islands and quiet natural landscapes that are rarely explored by visitors.
The kayaking route passes through protected lagoon environments before reaching Burano and the waters surrounding San Francesco del Deserto. Calm conditions and relatively sheltered waterways make this an excellent place to experience kayaking while discovering the ecological and historical importance of the Venetian Lagoon.
This tour is suitable for beginners and experienced kayakers alike. Around two hours of paddling is spread throughout the experience at a relaxed pace, with regular opportunities to stop, explore and rest along the way.
Participants should be comfortable taking part in moderate physical activity and should wear comfortable clothing suitable for getting close to the water. The experience is not wheelchair accessible. If you have sensory, cognitive or mobility requirements, please get in touch before booking so suitable arrangements can be discussed.
Led by a licensed Venetian guide, this experience combines kayaking with local history, wildlife and island culture to provide a much deeper understanding of the lagoon than is possible from the city alone. You'll discover places that many visitors never reach while learning about the traditions, ecology and communities that continue to shape Venice today.
Small group sizes allow the pace to be tailored to participants, creating a relaxed atmosphere both on and off the water. With quality equipment provided and routes adapted to weather and ability, it's an enjoyable way to explore one of Italy's most distinctive natural environments.
During the crossing you'll pass the islands of Le Vignole and Lazzaretto Novo. Your guide will explain their fascinating histories, from agricultural retreats and vineyards to Venice's pioneering quarantine system that helped protect the city during outbreaks of plague.
The journey itself offers excellent views across the open lagoon before arriving at Sant'Erasmo.
After arriving on Sant'Erasmo, often known as Venice's "vegetable garden", you'll receive a full safety briefing and become familiar with your kayak and equipment before launching onto the calm lagoon waters.
Whether you're new to kayaking or already experienced, the route is adapted to suit the group's ability and the day's conditions.
Begin your journey through peaceful saltmarshes and shallow waterways that form one of the lagoon's most important natural habitats. These wetlands support a wide variety of wildlife, including migratory birds, making this one of the most scenic and environmentally significant areas around Venice.
Away from the city's crowds, you'll experience a quieter landscape shaped by tides, traditional fishing and nature.
Continue kayaking towards Burano, one of the Venetian Lagoon's most recognisable islands. Famous for its brightly coloured houses, lace-making traditions and leaning bell tower, Burano offers the perfect opportunity to stretch your legs and explore on foot.
Enjoy some free time to wander through the colourful streets, relax with a drink or sample traditional bussolai biscuits before continuing your journey.
