You move into this session ready for a step up from the basics, with coaching designed to build confidence and control in slightly more powerful conditions. It’s a great choice if you’ve tried surfing before and want to feel more consistent while still learning in a friendly, structured environment. Clear guidance, easygoing coaching and a fun atmosphere help you develop at your own pace.
Stepping into the lesson, you’re welcomed by your instructor who talks you through the aims of the session and the type of waves you’ll be working with. You’ll be kitted out with a wetsuit, boots and board before heading to the shoreline for a short warm-up and a refresher on paddling technique, pop-ups and board control. Everything is explained in a relaxed, friendly style so you feel ready for the slightly punchier conditions ahead.
Once in the water, you’ll move into waist-high whitewater waves that carry more push than beginner waves but remain controlled and predictable. Your coach stays close, helping you adjust your stance, refine your timing and use the wave’s energy more effectively. You’ll have plenty of chances to practise, reset and try again, with guidance tailored to how you’re progressing. This helps you build strength, confidence and rhythm as rides start to become more controlled and satisfying.
As the lesson develops, you work on linking movements together and reading the water more naturally. Instructors keep the atmosphere supportive and light so the session feels enjoyable as well as productive. By the end, most surfers notice a jump in stability, technique and confidence, leaving the water with a clear sense of progress and motivation for their next step.
Newbridge sits on the edge of Edinburgh and offers easy access from the city, airport and major transport routes. You’ll find the surrounding area blends open countryside with modern links, making it straightforward to reach while still feeling like a break from the busy city centre.
Travelling here is simple whether you're driving, cycling or using public transport. Parking is available on site, and the area is well connected with regular bus and tram options nearby. The centre itself is positioned within spacious grounds beside the Cove, giving you a scenic spot to relax before or after your session.
You should be comfortable in the water and able to swim at least 25 metres without assistance. Since this session uses stronger whitewater, a basic level of fitness and confidence helps you get the most out of the lesson.
A willingness to try new movements and work slightly harder than in a beginner session will support faster progress. This lesson is aimed at those who can already manage the basics and are ready to move forward with more guided practice.
This centre is home to advanced wave technology, purpose-designed training zones and expert coaches who genuinely care about helping you improve. Every instructor uses simple, clear teaching methods that make progression achievable for all ages and fitness levels.
Over years of development, the team has refined the way lessons are structured so you can learn safely while having a great time. The approach focuses on confidence-building, inclusivity and encouraging people to enjoy surfing in a place designed to bring out the best in every surfer.
A lesson gives you guided support from an instructor who will focus on building confidence in the water, showing you how to handle your board, and helping you progress to the next stage of your surfing. This approach keeps things structured, with coaching tailored to the group’s ability so everyone learns at a pace that feels comfortable. In contrast, this session may involve more independent time on the waves depending on what you’ve booked.
A standard session is more about free surfing within a supervised environment. You’ll still have support around you if needed, but the aim is to let you apply your skills and enjoy time on the water. It’s ideal for anyone wanting space to practise rather than follow a coached plan from start to finish.
Changing facilities are available close to where this session is based, providing a warm place to get ready before heading out and somewhere comfortable to warm up afterwards. These areas are designed to be spacious and easy to use, especially for families or anyone managing young children or extra kit.
You’ll find indoor changing rooms with showers, lockers, and amenities such as hair dryers. Everything is arranged so you can store your valuables securely and rinse off after the water without needing to rush.
When this session is running, qualified lifeguards are on duty to monitor the water and keep everyone safe. They work alongside trained surf instructors who handle both the coaching environment and water-based supervision.
Their training covers a wide range of rescue and first-aid skills, ensuring you’re taking part in an activity overseen by professionals who can respond quickly to changing conditions. This gives you the reassurance of having expert support throughout your time in the water.
You’ll need to be able to swim at least 25 metres without any assistance to join this session. This minimum level ensures you’re confident enough to move through the water independently, even if you fall from your board or need to paddle back to a safe area.
Being comfortable in the water is just as important as swimming ability. Having a bit of confidence helps you get more out of the activity, as you’ll be more relaxed while learning new skills or handling waves.
Wetsuits and accessories suitable for local water conditions are provided as part of this session, including additional items like boots, gloves, or a hood when needed. Boards are also supplied so you don’t need to purchase or carry your own equipment unless you want to.
You’re welcome to bring your own wetsuit if you prefer using personal kit, and the team can check it fits the conditions on the day. Bringing a familiar wetsuit can be helpful for regular surfers wanting a consistent feel in the water.
Local water temperatures can vary, and cooler days are always possible. To keep you comfortable, the centre provides thick wetsuits and thermal accessories designed to retain heat during longer sessions.
Even on cold days, these wetsuits offer consistent warmth so you can focus on your time in the waves. Staff will help ensure you’re dressed appropriately before you start.
There is a café, bar, or restaurant near the activity area where you can order food and drinks before or after this session. Seating is available inside, with some spots offering views of the water so you can watch others surf.
Takeaway options are usually available as well, making it easy to grab something quickly between activities. Staff at the venue can guide you through ordering, dietary information, and seating availability.
You don’t need to be an expert, but you should have a little confidence from trying surfing before or spending time in the water. This session uses stronger whitewater, so it’s ideal if you’ve already mastered the basics such as paddling, standing up and balancing on smaller waves. If you feel comfortable with those early steps and want to progress faster, this is the right level for you.
Building on existing skills means the instructor can help you push your ability without overwhelming you. This leads to stronger technique, better consistency and a more enjoyable surf experience overall. If you’re unsure whether this level suits you, the coaching team can guide you based on your goals.
Young surfers aged 13 and over are welcome, and many enjoy the challenge of slightly bigger waves. Teens often progress quickly because the coaching style encourages independence while still keeping a close eye on safety. The clear structure of the lesson helps younger surfers understand each step before moving on.
Parents can feel reassured knowing that safety, warmth and comfort are prioritised throughout. Wetsuits, boots and gloves help maintain body temperature and instructors check in frequently to make sure everyone is coping well with the conditions.
