See who can stick an axe in the target after an hour on the indoor lanes in Portadown. Instructors show you grip and stance first, then you turn it into a friendly contest once the throw feels safe. You do not need any previous experience, and a pair can come without filling a whole combat squad.
Nobody starts on the contest. You learn grip, stance, and a safe release first, then practise on the target until the marshal is happy the axe is not bouncing back toward the lane. Most people are hitting the board within a few minutes, even if they have never thrown before. Closed-toe shoes stay on for the whole session, and instructors stay on the lane from the first throw.
The rest of the hour is a scored contest against your group. You take turns, keep a running total, and work up to tomahawks and throwing knives once the marshals are happy with your technique. If you would rather stay on axes for the whole contest, say so at the briefing. The last rounds finish on the same lanes you started on, then the axes go back and you can linger in the lobby if you want.
The lanes live at 10 Bleary Road, Portadown, BT63 5NE, inside a historic mill building. The session stays fully indoors, so weather outside does not decide whether you throw, and you never have to stand in the rain between rounds.
Portadown is about 25 minutes from Belfast via the M1, with a short hop from the local train station and both city airports. Follow the signs for the indoor combat centre once you reach Bleary Road, then come in for check-in. Give yourself a few extra minutes at the weekend so you are ready for the coaching burst rather than walking in late.
You need to be 16 or over, able to stand and throw, and happy to follow marshal instructions. No previous axe throwing experience is required. The first part of the hour is coaching, so you learn the release before anyone starts keeping score.
Groups need 2 to 50 players, so a pair can come without filling a six-person combat squad. Closed-toe shoes are required for the whole hour. If someone in the group is under 16, they will need a different activity. Larger groups are welcome on the same session.
Pairs and work groups fit this session well, because the minimum is two people rather than a full combat squad. Instructors stay on the lane from the first throw, which is why first-timers can enjoy the hour without feeling rushed onto a contest they are not ready for.
Parts of the mill date back to 1619, when the site was part of the local linen industry, and the indoor lanes now sit inside that same building. Coffee, hot food, and snacks are on site if you want to linger in the lobby after the last throw and settle who actually won.

Portadown
We're based in a historic mill in Portadown, with a fully indoor arena so you can play whatever the weather is doing. You'll find airsoft, paintball, splat, foam-dart battles, archery tag, and axe throwing under one roof, and our marshals brief every group before you step into the arena.
Between games you can take a break in the lobby with coffee, hot food, and snacks on site. We're about 25 minutes from Belfast via the M1, so it's an easy run for groups coming from the city or either airport.
