Step into the trees and try your hand at one of the most satisfying target sports around. This two-hour woodland session combines expert coaching, safe throwing practice and friendly competition in a relaxed outdoor setting near Dunbar. Ideal for groups, celebrations and anyone keen to try something different.
After meeting at the base, you’ll walk around ten minutes into the woodland to reach the purpose-built throwing range. Once there, the instructor will run through a full safety briefing and demonstrate the correct technique, covering grip, stance, swing and release. You’ll begin at a suitable distance from the timber targets, focusing on smooth, controlled movements before adding power.
With guidance throughout, you’ll have time to practise and refine your throw. The moment the axe lands cleanly and sticks in the wood is surprisingly rewarding, and most people improve quickly with a few small adjustments. The instructor offers individual feedback, helping you develop consistency and confidence as the session progresses.
The second half shifts into a relaxed competition format. Expect scoring rounds, light-hearted rivalry and plenty of encouragement from the group. To round things off, everyone takes part in the Hammerschlagen challenge, bringing a lively and memorable finish before heading back through the woodland.
The range is set within sheltered woodland near Dunbar in East Lothian, approximately 40 minutes from Edinburgh by car. The natural setting provides a dedicated space away from busy public areas, creating a focused yet informal atmosphere for the session.
East Lothian is known for its open countryside and coastal scenery, making it a popular area for outdoor activities throughout the year. Clear access from the A1087 makes finding the meeting point straightforward, with parking available nearby before the short walk to the range.
No prior experience is required, as full instruction is provided from the outset. Participants should be comfortable with moderate physical movement, as throwing involves controlled upper body action and standing for periods of time.
Suitable outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear are essential due to uneven woodland ground. In colder weather, warm layers are recommended, and a waterproof jacket is advisable if rain is expected.
Sessions are led by highly experienced outdoor professionals with a strong focus on safety, preparation and best practice. Small group sizes allow for personalised coaching, ensuring everyone receives clear guidance and individual feedback throughout the experience.
The organisation operates with a clear commitment to ethical adventure and environmental responsibility. By keeping groups small, prioritising sustainable practices and reinvesting a portion of profits into environmental causes, it ensures that outdoor experiences are delivered with care for both people and place.
As a responsible and ethical adventure company we are committed to the wild and natural environment we work in. We strive to put the planet first in everything we do.
We recognise that a love for our beautiful wild places demands active participation in the fight to save them. This is of course a dynamic process and we are always striving to minimise our impact in, educate our clients on and improve our contribution towards, our natural environment.
We align as partners with adventuro, who are a net-zero company from day-one, partnering with Rewilding Britain to protect our playground.
Yes, safety is carefully managed from the start. A full briefing is given before any throwing begins, covering range rules, safe handling and how sessions are controlled.
The instructor supervises all activity and ensures that only one participant throws at a time within clearly defined safety zones. This structured approach keeps the experience controlled and enjoyable.
Strength is less important than technique. The key is learning how to generate smooth rotation and controlled release rather than relying on force.
Most people find that with proper guidance they can achieve consistent results within a short time. The axes used are designed specifically for this activity and are manageable for beginners.
Outdoor clothing suitable for the weather is essential, as the range is in woodland and sessions run year round. Sturdy footwear with good grip is recommended.
Avoid loose scarves or items that could interfere with movement. In colder months, layered clothing works best so you can adjust as needed.
Participants typically throw from just over three metres away to begin with. Distances may be adjusted slightly depending on ability and confidence levels.
The focus is on developing correct rotation and accuracy rather than increasing distance too quickly.
Yes, this format works particularly well for birthdays, team building days, stag or hen groups and organised gatherings. The competition element adds an engaging group dynamic.
Private sessions can often accommodate slightly larger numbers than standard bookings. It’s advisable to enquire in advance for tailored arrangements.
The standard minimum age is 12, although younger participants may be accepted for private groups depending on circumstances.
All younger participants must be supervised, and suitability is assessed to ensure they can follow safety instructions and manage the equipment responsibly.
