This session is designed for surfers who have developed solid control on whitewater or beginner reef waves and are ready to ride green waves with confidence. You’ll gain access to a range of wave types, from relaxed cruising waves to steeper turns that encourage technique refinement and fluid style. It’s an ideal environment to consolidate skills, practise manoeuvres, and challenge yourself in a controlled setting.
Your session begins with a shoreside briefing where instructors explain the different waves available – Cruiser for relaxed riding, Cruiser+ for slightly faster, longer rides, and Turns for more challenging manoeuvres. You’ll also be fitted with a wetsuit and your choice of board, ensuring comfort and suitability for the wave type.
On the Cruiser wave, you’ll practise smooth, relaxed rides, focusing on style, stance and trimming. Instructors provide feedback on technique, positioning, and timing, helping you feel confident as you explore wave dynamics.
Next, you’ll move onto the Turns wave, where steeper sections and medium speed allow you to practise cutbacks, re-entries, and simple carves. Coaches observe closely, offering personalised tips to improve flow and efficiency while ensuring every wave is ridden safely. The combination of wave types encourages progression at your own pace while maintaining a fun, supportive environment.
By the end of the session, you’ll have had multiple attempts at linking turns, controlling your speed, and reading the waves. This session builds confidence and technical ability, leaving you ready for more advanced sessions or independent surfing.
The session takes place in Newbridge, Edinburgh, at a purpose-built surf lagoon offering consistent, controllable waves. The lagoon is designed to provide a safe, structured environment for intermediate surfers while still simulating open water challenges. Clear sightlines make it easy for friends and family to watch, and the layout ensures smooth access to changing rooms and equipment areas.
Easily reached from Edinburgh city centre and surrounding areas, the site has free parking and convenient drop-off points. EV chargers and accessible paths enhance the overall experience, while nearby green spaces and cafés make it simple to enjoy the day with family or friends.
You should be confident riding green waves and able to control your board while catching waves consistently. Some prior experience on reef or beginner waves is recommended to get the most out of the session.
Familiarity with wave positioning, timing, and paddling techniques is essential. A reasonable level of fitness is advised, as you’ll spend extended periods riding and manoeuvring on the waves.
The centre provides intermediate surfers with a safe, structured environment to build confidence and refine skills. Experienced coaches offer technical feedback and guidance for a range of wave types, ensuring progression without compromising safety.
Attention to detail in wave design, board selection, and session pacing allows surfers to focus on improving technique. Combined with friendly, encouraging instructors, the sessions deliver a professional yet relaxed experience for those seeking to advance their surfing.
A lesson gives you guided support from an instructor who will focus on building confidence in the water, showing you how to handle your board, and helping you progress to the next stage of your surfing. This approach keeps things structured, with coaching tailored to the group’s ability so everyone learns at a pace that feels comfortable. In contrast, this session may involve more independent time on the waves depending on what you’ve booked.
A standard session is more about free surfing within a supervised environment. You’ll still have support around you if needed, but the aim is to let you apply your skills and enjoy time on the water. It’s ideal for anyone wanting space to practise rather than follow a coached plan from start to finish.
Changing facilities are available close to where this session is based, providing a warm place to get ready before heading out and somewhere comfortable to warm up afterwards. These areas are designed to be spacious and easy to use, especially for families or anyone managing young children or extra kit.
You’ll find indoor changing rooms with showers, lockers, and amenities such as hair dryers. Everything is arranged so you can store your valuables securely and rinse off after the water without needing to rush.
When this session is running, qualified lifeguards are on duty to monitor the water and keep everyone safe. They work alongside trained surf instructors who handle both the coaching environment and water-based supervision.
Their training covers a wide range of rescue and first-aid skills, ensuring you’re taking part in an activity overseen by professionals who can respond quickly to changing conditions. This gives you the reassurance of having expert support throughout your time in the water.
You’ll need to be able to swim at least 25 metres without any assistance to join this session. This minimum level ensures you’re confident enough to move through the water independently, even if you fall from your board or need to paddle back to a safe area.
Being comfortable in the water is just as important as swimming ability. Having a bit of confidence helps you get more out of the activity, as you’ll be more relaxed while learning new skills or handling waves.
Wetsuits and accessories suitable for local water conditions are provided as part of this session, including additional items like boots, gloves, or a hood when needed. Boards are also supplied so you don’t need to purchase or carry your own equipment unless you want to.
You’re welcome to bring your own wetsuit if you prefer using personal kit, and the team can check it fits the conditions on the day. Bringing a familiar wetsuit can be helpful for regular surfers wanting a consistent feel in the water.
Local water temperatures can vary, and cooler days are always possible. To keep you comfortable, the centre provides thick wetsuits and thermal accessories designed to retain heat during longer sessions.
Even on cold days, these wetsuits offer consistent warmth so you can focus on your time in the waves. Staff will help ensure you’re dressed appropriately before you start.
There is a café, bar, or restaurant near the activity area where you can order food and drinks before or after this session. Seating is available inside, with some spots offering views of the water so you can watch others surf.
Takeaway options are usually available as well, making it easy to grab something quickly between activities. Staff at the venue can guide you through ordering, dietary information, and seating availability.
You’ll have access to Cruiser, Cruiser+, and Turns waves. Cruiser offers a relaxed, open-face ride ideal for practicing style and trimming. Cruiser+ gives slightly faster, longer rides to practise flow and positioning. Turns provide medium-speed, open-face waves with steeper sections for practising manoeuvres, cutbacks, and re-entries.
Instructors guide you to choose the wave that matches your skill and progression goals. You can move between waves during the session to practise different skills and challenges.
Yes, this session is aimed at intermediate surfers who are comfortable riding green waves and managing basic turns. You should be able to paddle effectively, maintain balance, and catch waves consistently.
Instructors provide support and guidance, but prior ability to control your board and read waves ensures you can safely practise more advanced techniques without frustration or risk.
By the end of the session, you should be able to confidently ride green waves, link basic turns, manage speed and trimming, and understand wave positioning better. The session is designed to give tangible skill improvement and increased confidence for future intermediate or advanced surfing.
You’ll finish with a clearer understanding of wave dynamics, smoother movement on the board, and practical experience linking turns and rides efficiently.
