Experience one of Scotland’s most remote and rewarding Munro bagging challenges deep in the Fisherfield Forest. This fully guided expedition is ideal for experienced hillwalkers looking to summit five wild and isolated peaks, with the added adventure of a multi-day wild camp in a landscape untouched by roads. You'll start and finish at a welcoming Highland lodge before heading out into one of the most secluded corners of the country.
Day 1 – Arrival
Meet at Fraoch Lodge in the Cairngorms National Park between 5 and 7pm. There’ll be time to settle in before a home-cooked dinner at 7:30pm, followed by a welcome briefing over tea and coffee. Pick-up from Aviemore train station is available with advance notice.
Day 2 – Walk-in to Fisherfield
After breakfast, transfer west to Dundonnell (approx. 1hr 45min drive). Begin a 4-hour walk carrying all camping gear into the heart of Fisherfield. The route crosses upland tracks and a river, ending in a glen cradled beneath all five Munros. Set up camp in this spectacular location.
Distance: 13km | Ascent: 460m | Time: 4hrs 15min (plus breaks)
Day 3 – First Munro circuit
Set out with daypacks to climb Sgurr Ban (989m), Mullach Coire Mhic Fhearchair (1018m), and Beinn Tarsuinn (937m). The route features steep climbs, sweeping ridges, and high mountain lochans with fantastic views throughout. Return to basecamp via a rough descent through a neighbouring coire.
Distance: 12km | Ascent: 1280m | Time: 5hrs 30min (plus breaks)
Day 4 – Second Munro circuit
Climb A’ Mhaighdean (967m), widely considered the most remote mountain in Britain, followed by the final summit of Ruadh Stac Mor (918m). The terrain is varied and rugged with dramatic drops and spectacular ridge views before descending to camp.
Distance: 13km | Ascent: 990m | Time: 5hrs 15min (plus breaks)
Day 5 – Walk-out and return to the lodge
Retrace the walk-out with lighter packs and views across to An Teallach. Stop at Shenaval Bothy before continuing to the road for the return to Fraoch Lodge. Enjoy a hot shower and one last homemade meal.
Distance: 13km | Ascent: 355m | Time: 4hrs 30min (plus breaks)
Day 6 – Departure
After breakfast, transfer to Aviemore train station for onward travel.
Fraoch Lodge is based in Boat of Garten, a quiet village in the Cairngorms National Park. Just ten minutes from Aviemore, it’s a great location for accessing both the local mountains and more remote areas like Fisherfield. The surrounding forest and hills are rich in wildlife, and the village has local shops, a café, and excellent rail links.
The walk-in starts from Dundonnell in Wester Ross, leading into the Fisherfield Forest—one of the most remote parts of mainland Scotland. With no road access, reaching this area on foot makes the experience all the more rewarding.
Before and after the expedition, guests stay at a comfortable walker-friendly lodge with shared bathrooms, drying facilities, and a wood-burning stove. Bedrooms are simple and cosy, with towels and bedding provided.
During the expedition, accommodation is in tents at a remote wild campsite. Tents and cooking equipment are supplied, and meals are prepared together in camp. It’s a chance to switch off, live simply, and wake up surrounded by mountains.
This trip is suitable for those with previous mountain hiking experience and a good level of fitness. You’ll need to carry a rucksack with overnight kit and be prepared for rough ground, variable weather, and river crossings.
The pace is steady but expect long, challenging days in remote terrain. Wild camping experience is helpful but not essential, as full support is provided.
The guiding team is led by a qualified International Mountain Leader with over 25 years of experience guiding in Scotland and abroad. With a background in geology, environmental science and expedition work in Pakistan, India, and Kenya, the lead guide brings unique insight to each trip. Routes are chosen not just for the summits, but for their geological features, wildlife, and sense of adventure.
Support doesn’t stop at the trailhead—every aspect of your trip is taken care of. From tailored logistics to fresh, locally sourced meals, the team ensures your time off the hill is just as enjoyable as your time on it. The lodge is run by a host with a Postgraduate Certificate in Education and years of travel experience, offering warm hospitality and nourishing meals that reflect the best of the Highlands. When needed, additional expert local guides are brought in to ensure every trip runs smoothly and safely.
