This Cairngorms walking holiday combines expert-led hikes with wildlife encounters in some of the UK’s most ecologically rich landscapes. Designed around three full days of varied walking, it covers a mix of forest, moorland and mountain terrain with a comfortable base at Fraoch Lodge and fresh, locally sourced meals throughout. The itinerary is paced to allow time to explore, observe and learn—whether you’re spotting birds, discovering alpine plants or watching for nocturnal mammals from a hide.
Day 1 – Arrival and Welcome
Arrive at Fraoch Lodge between 5–7pm. After settling in, join the rest of the group for a home-cooked dinner at 7.30pm. Your guide will then run through the plan for the days ahead, covering walking routes, gear tips, and wildlife to watch for. If you're arriving by train or plane, transfers from Aviemore or Inverness can be arranged.
Day 2 – Geal Charn Mor and Evening Wildlife Hide
The day starts with a steady climb through native birch and pine into open moorland in the Monadhliath hills. As the landscape opens, expect to hear the calls of Buzzards and spot species like Red Grouse, Mountain Hare and Golden Plover. Reaching the 824m summit of Geal Charn Mor, you’ll enjoy panoramic views over lochs, marshes and across to the high Cairngorm peaks. After descending via woodland and farmland trails, return to the lodge for dinner. In the evening, visit a local wildlife hide for the chance to see Pine Martens and Badgers up close.
Distance: 15km | Ascent: 660m | Walking time: 5h 45m
Day 3 – Abernethy Forest and RSPB Reserve
This route explores the ancient pinewoods of the Abernethy Reserve—part of the once-vast Forest of Caledon. The walk weaves through lichen-draped pines and open moorland, with good chances of seeing Crested Tits, Siskins, and possibly Capercaillie. The area is home to more than 4,500 species, many of which are rarely found elsewhere in the UK. Along the way, pass the ruins of old blackhouses and reach the River Nethy for lunch beside its waterfall. The return leg passes through more forest trails before stopping at the RSPB Nature Centre at Loch Garten. In the evening, enjoy a group meal at a nearby restaurant.
Distance: 16km | Ascent: 420m | Walking time: 4h 35m
Day 4 – Cairngorm Summit and Alpine Habitat
Start from around 600m elevation and climb gradually towards the Cairngorm Plateau. As you gain height, the terrain shifts to open, rocky tundra with cliff views and scattered patches of alpine flora. Along the route, look out for high-altitude birdlife such as Ptarmigan, Dotterel and Snow Bunting. The route skirts above the glacial trough of Loch A’an, ringed by dramatic 300m cliffs, before the final push to the 1,245m summit of Cairngorm. Weather permitting, expect far-reaching views across the national park.
Distance: 12km | Ascent: 810m | Walking time: 5h 15m
Day 5 – Departure
After a relaxed breakfast, most guests depart in the morning. If you’re travelling by train or air, your hosts will make sure you’re dropped off in time. Extra nights may be available on request if you’d like to explore more of the area independently.
The holiday is based in Boat of Garten, a quiet village located within the Cairngorms National Park. Just 10 minutes from Aviemore and surrounded by pine forest, moorland and mountains, it offers access to a huge variety of habitats with minimal travel required.
Walks each day take place within protected conservation areas or upland plateaus rich in wildlife and geological interest.
Fraoch Lodge provides a friendly and comfortable base for your stay, with shared facilities and simple, clean rooms. Meals are a highlight, using ingredients from the garden and local suppliers whenever possible.
The lodge also serves as a social hub where guests can relax and review the day’s sightings and stories over tea or a dram.
You’ll need moderate fitness and be comfortable walking for several hours each day over uneven ground, sometimes with ascent.
Paths range from woodland tracks to open hillside and mountain routes. No technical skills are needed, but sturdy walking boots and suitable outdoor clothing are essential.
The guiding team includes an International Mountain Leader and other experienced professionals with backgrounds in geology, environmental science, and outdoor education. They bring each walk to life with insights into wildlife, habitat and landscape, helping you see more and understand what you’re seeing.
Logistics, food and guiding are all handled in-house or through trusted local experts, ensuring consistent quality and a relaxed, informative experience.
