This course is ideal for those looking to transition from flat water to the excitement of whitewater. It provides a comprehensive and supportive environment for whitewater beginners and semi-experienced grade 2 paddlers. Over five days, you’ll gain the essential skills needed to navigate and enjoy whitewater safely and confidently, with guidance from professional coaches.
Across the five days, you will paddle through some of the most suitable whitewater locations around Llangollen. Each day will focus on a specific theme aligned with the five key elements of whitewater kayaking: Boat Control, Understanding the River, Controlling Momentum, River Safety, and Mindset.
Mornings will typically involve technique-focused sessions, with afternoons dedicated to applying these skills on the river under real conditions. By the end of the course, you'll be well-prepared to tackle grade 2 rapids independently and confidently plan future paddling adventures.
You will also receive a personalised progression plan and access to the mentorship group, ensuring continued development even after the course concludes.
This course is based in Llangollen, North Wales, a prime location known for its beautiful landscapes and ideal whitewater conditions.
The River Dee, with its mix of calm sections and exciting rapids, provides the perfect environment for learning and progression.
Participants should have basic flat-water kayaking skills, including the ability to paddle forwards, maintain stability, and wear a spray deck comfortably. Experience equivalent to the Paddle Explore Award is recommended.
We believe that kayaking should be accessible to everyone, regardless of physical fitness or strength. Our approach is tailored to ensure that every participant can enjoy the excitement of river paddling in a way that suits their abilities.
Led by our passionate director, Jamie, who has extensive experience and a deep love for the sport, our courses are designed not just to teach skills, but to foster a lifelong connection with kayaking. Whether you're new to the sport or looking to advance your abilities, we’re committed to helping you achieve your goals on the water.
You should have basic kayaking skills on flat water, including the ability to paddle forwards, maintain stability, and wear a spray deck comfortably.
Experience equivalent to the Paddle Explore Award is recommended, but you do not need prior whitewater experience.
You'll need to bring your kayaking equipment, including a boat, paddle, spray deck, buoyancy aid, helmet, wetsuit or dry wear, and shoes suitable for the river. A drybag is also essential for keeping your lunch and personal items dry.
If you’re missing any of these items, boat hire is available for £25 per day, and we can help you source any other equipment. Please contact us using the details on your booking confirmation to arrange.
Accommodation and meals are not included in the course price.
We can recommend local hotels and guesthouses in Llangollen to suit various budgets. You will need to arrange and book your own accommodation.
While you don't need to be particularly fit or strong, whitewater kayaking does require a moderate level of physical exertion.
The course is designed to be challenging yet accessible, allowing you to develop skills at your own pace. We focus on technique and safety, ensuring that everyone can participate fully regardless of physical ability.
Kayaking is an all-weather sport, and we’ll go ahead with the course unless conditions are deemed unsafe by our coaches. We will let you know as soon as possible if this is the case.
