This 5-day adventure combines the challenge of summiting North Africa’s highest peak with a unique Sahara desert experience. Guests will trek Mount Toubkal, visit Berber villages, and ride camels across golden dunes, finishing with nights under the desert sky. The journey starts and ends in Marrakech, offering both mountain and desert landscapes in one trip.
Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Marrakech to Imlil, the gateway to Mount Toubkal. Upon arrival, meet your mountain guide and mule team before trekking through the Ait Mizane Valley. Wander past Berber villages and visit the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch. Overnight at Toubkal Refuge offers panoramic mountain views and a genuine refuge experience.
Day two starts early with the ascent to Mount Toubkal (4,167m). Pause to enjoy sweeping vistas of the Atlas range and the distant Sahara. Descend carefully to Imlil village for an overnight stay in a local guesthouse. On the third day, travel south across the Tizi n’Tichka Pass to reach the UNESCO-listed Aït Ben Haddou kasbah, before continuing to the dramatic Dades Valley for overnight accommodation.
Morning exploration of Todra Gorge leads to Merzouga, where guests ride camels into the Erg Chebbi dunes in time for sunset. Overnight in a desert camp provides the chance to enjoy traditional music, Moroccan food, and a night beneath the stars. The final day offers an early desert sunrise, a camel ride back to the village, and a scenic drive through Draa Valley and Ouarzazate en route to Marrakech.
Marrakech serves as the starting point, a vibrant city full of historic medina streets, bustling souks, and rich cultural landmarks. Routes lead through the High Atlas Mountains with views of terraced valleys, Berber villages, and rugged mountain roads before reaching the desert region near Merzouga and Erg Chebbi.
Travel includes stops at UNESCO World Heritage sites and dramatic natural formations. Highlights like Aït Ben Haddou, Todra Gorge, and Dades Valley ensure guests experience the breadth of Morocco’s cultural and natural diversity in one journey.
Over five days, stays are arranged in diverse settings reflecting the environment and culture. The mountain refuge provides a traditional trekking experience with basic shared facilities.
Subsequent nights include a guesthouse in Imlil, a hotel in Dades Valley, and a desert camp in Erg Chebbi. Optional luxury tents in the desert offer private bathrooms, more space, and extra comfort while maintaining the authentic desert atmosphere.
Climbing Mount Toubkal requires a moderate level of fitness. Expect 5–8 hours of walking at high altitude, mostly on established trails with some steep sections. Trekking poles and layered clothing are recommended to ensure comfort and safety.
Active families and beginners with stamina can enjoy the trek, while guides tailor the pace to each group. Essential gear includes sturdy boots, layered clothing, and a daypack for personal items like water, snacks, and sunscreen.
Local expertise ensures an authentic experience, with guides sharing insights into Berber culture, mountain life, and desert traditions. All logistics, including accommodation and guiding services, are professionally organised, removing logistical stress from your journey.
Personalised attention on private tours allows flexibility with stops, pacing, and optional activities such as luxury desert tents. The combination of mountain trekking and desert exploration provides a well-rounded and memorable Moroccan adventure.
A moderate level of fitness is enough for this trek. Participants should be comfortable walking several hours a day on varying terrain, including steep sections.
Regular exercise before the tour, such as walking or hiking, will make the experience more enjoyable. Guides adjust the pace so all participants can reach the summit safely.
Beginners with good stamina can complete the trek, as no technical climbing is involved. Guides offer step-by-step support and adjust the schedule according to the group’s needs.
Bringing trekking poles and layering clothing helps manage altitude and temperature changes. A small backpack for daily essentials keeps the climb comfortable.
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–November) provide moderate temperatures and clear trails. Snow in winter may require crampons or ice axes, making conditions more challenging.
The desert is most comfortable outside peak summer, avoiding extreme heat. Planning around these months ensures better weather and a safer, more enjoyable journey.
Hiking boots, layered clothing, and a warm jacket are essential for the mountains. A sleeping bag may be needed if not renting locally, along with a headlamp, sunscreen, and sunglasses.
For desert sections, include light clothing, a scarf or turban for sand protection, and plenty of water. Comfortable footwear and a small backpack for daily essentials make both trekking and desert exploration easier.
Luxury tents offer private bathrooms, hot showers, and extra space while keeping the desert experience authentic. Booking ahead is recommended to secure availability.
Standard desert camp tents still provide an authentic night under the stars, with local music and traditional meals enhancing the cultural experience.
The tour is private regarding vehicles, drivers, and guides, allowing a personalised itinerary and flexible stops.
Mountain refuge accommodation may be shared with other trekkers, adding a communal aspect while keeping privacy during desert stays.
Breakfast is included every day, with lunch and dinner provided according to the itinerary. Road trip lunches are excluded to allow guests to explore local dining options.
Desert camp meals feature traditional Moroccan cuisine, often prepared fresh by local cooks, offering a true taste of the region.
Sunset and sunrise treks typically last 2–3 hours. Experienced guides ensure safe riding and provide support for first-time camel riders.
Animals are well cared for and accustomed to tourists. Camel rides are suitable for children over 5, making it a family-friendly experience.
Mountain refuges offer basic shared facilities, while guesthouses and hotels provide comfort and local hospitality.
Desert camps include standard tents, with optional luxury upgrades. Each location is carefully selected for safety, scenery, and cultural immersion.

Multilingual guides are trained in first aid and experienced with trekking, camel rides, and desert logistics, ensuring a secure and enriching journey.
