Experience a three-day adventure through one of Albania’s most beautiful regions, combining mountain hiking, village culture, and scenic boat travel. This trip links Komani Lake, Valbona, and Theth with comfortable guesthouse stays and plenty of time to enjoy the landscapes and local dishes. Every day offers something new, from peaceful waters to high alpine paths and historic sites.
Day 1: Tirana → Shkoder → Komani Lake → Shala River → Valbona
The day begins with an early transfer from Tirana towards Shkoder, leading to a short break at Komani before boarding a small boat. The journey across the lake opens up quiet stretches of water and impressive cliffs before turning into the bright waters of the Shala River. Time here can be spent swimming, resting on the riverside, or joining optional activities such as kayaking. Lunch is served beside the river, followed by a continuation to Fierza, where a private transfer takes you deeper into the Alps.
Stops at Xhema’s Little Lake and the Water Millstone add extra variety before reaching your guesthouse in Valbona. Your hosts greet you with a warm welcome, and the day ends with a shared meal featuring homemade dishes typical of the region.
Day 2: Valbona → Theth via Valbona Pass
A traditional breakfast sets you up for the famous Valbona Pass hike. A short transfer brings you to the starting point, where the trail leads through forests, open slopes, and viewpoints overlooking the Dinaric Alps. Two rest stops along the way offer refreshments and memorable views. After reaching Theth, you’ll be collected and taken to Nderlysaj to explore its natural cave pools and the well-known Blue Eye.
You then settle into a friendly guesthouse for the evening, enjoying another homemade dinner and a relaxed atmosphere after a rewarding day outdoors.
Day 3: Thethi Valley → Shkoder → Tirana
Breakfast prepares you for a final morning visiting the Isolation Tower and the impressive Grunas Waterfall. These stops offer a mix of history and natural scenery that round off the trip well. After exploring the village area, a return transfer takes you back to Shkoder.
A farewell lunch is included before onward travel, and anyone needing to continue to Tirana can do so as part of the arranged journey.
The route travels through some of the most remarkable areas of the northern Albanian Alps, beginning with Komani Lake. This long, winding body of water is surrounded by steep cliffs and narrow passages carved through limestone. The boat journey acts as a gateway to the remote Shala River, where clear water, small beaches, and secluded rest areas create a peaceful change of pace. Moving deeper into the mountains, Valbona sits in a wide valley known for meadows, riverbeds, and views of high surrounding peaks.
The second half of the trip continues to Theth, a historic stone-built village known for its traditional architecture and mountain springs. Theth’s natural features, such as the Blue Eye and Grunas Waterfall, are among the most recognisable in the region. Its cultural sites, including the Isolation Tower and old church, give you a glimpse into local stories and customs. The entire area is ideal for those wanting a blend of nature, history, and varied landscapes.
Guesthouses in both Valbona and Theth are chosen for comfort, warm hospitality, and authentic mountain character. Rooms are private, simple, and cosy, offering everything needed for a comfortable rest. Dinner and breakfast are prepared fresh using locally sourced ingredients, allowing you to enjoy meals that reflect long-standing culinary traditions. Hosts often enjoy sharing stories about the region, giving the experience a friendly and homely atmosphere.
Communal areas are available for relaxing, warming up after hiking, or chatting with others at the end of the day. Many guesthouses are run by families who have lived in the mountains for generations, adding an extra sense of connection to the communities. While not luxurious, the accommodation is selected carefully to support a pleasant, welcoming stay in both villages.
A moderate level of fitness is recommended as you’ll be hiking for several hours on uneven ground, particularly during the Valbona Pass day. The terrain can include loose stones, forest paths, and steady inclines, so being comfortable with full-day walking will help you enjoy the route at a relaxed pace. Good-quality footwear, warm clothing for morning and evening temperatures, and a small backpack for daily essentials all contribute to a more enjoyable trip.
No technical mountain skills are required, and the guide supports you throughout the hike, offering information about the route, controlling the pace, and helping during steeper sections if needed. Anyone with a general interest in the outdoors, local culture, and quiet mountain settings will find the trip accessible and rewarding.
