Develop the skills needed to lead traditional climbs over two full days in the Peak District. Designed for climbers ready to move into placing their own protection, the course focuses on safety, judgement and practical experience. Expect a hands-on approach with plenty of time applying systems on real routes.
Day one centres around understanding equipment and how to use it effectively. You’ll learn how to place protection such as nuts and cams, assess placements and remove gear efficiently. Time is spent practising these skills repeatedly so they become familiar before applying them on climbs.
Once the basics are established, attention shifts to building simple anchor systems and managing ropes safely. You’ll begin to understand how different pieces of gear work together and how to create reliable setups in a range of situations.
Day two builds on this by introducing more independence in your climbing. You’ll take on greater responsibility for route decisions, gear placement and system setup while being supported throughout. The aim is to bring everything together so you can approach trad climbing with confidence and a clear understanding of safe practice.
Training takes place at trad climbing venues within the Peak District, selected to suit your level and the skills being covered. These areas offer a range of routes that are well suited to learning protection placement and building systems.
Locations are chosen based on current conditions to ensure safe and productive sessions across both days. Final meeting points are confirmed in advance.
Participants should already have a solid foundation in climbing, including the ability to belay safely, tie in and manage basic rope systems. Experience climbing outdoors on top rope or seconding routes is recommended.
Confidence climbing indoors, including lead climbing, will help you get the most out of the course. For anyone under 18, an adult must be present throughout.
Guidance is provided by a qualified climbing coach with over 10 years of experience working with climbers progressing into more advanced skills. Emphasis is placed on understanding systems properly so they can be applied confidently outside of the course.
Small group delivery allows for detailed feedback and regular hands-on practice. Each session is shaped around your experience, helping you build confidence at a steady and manageable pace.
