Build the skills needed to climb outdoors with confidence over a two-day course in the Peak District. Designed to move you towards independence, the focus is on safe systems, decision making and practical experience on real rock. Ideal for those ready to take more responsibility for their own climbing.
Day one introduces the core building blocks of climbing outdoors safely. Time is spent refining belaying, learning essential knots and improving movement on real rock. You’ll begin to understand how systems work and why they are set up in certain ways, rather than just following instructions.
As the course progresses, attention shifts towards building simple rope systems and understanding how to choose safe anchors. You’ll get hands-on experience setting up climbs, with guidance provided throughout to ensure everything is clear and repeatable.
Day two focuses on developing independence by giving you more responsibility within a controlled environment. You’ll begin to make decisions around setup, route choice and safety checks, applying everything learned so far. By the end, you’ll have a clearer understanding of what you can do on your own and where you may want further experience.
Sessions take place across a range of Peak District climbing venues, selected based on conditions and suitability for the skills being covered. Areas such as The Roaches and Stanage Edge are commonly used due to their variety of routes and accessible setups.
Locations are chosen to allow progression across the two days, with suitable terrain for both learning systems and applying them in a practical setting. Final venue details are confirmed before the course begins.
Some basic climbing experience is recommended, either from indoor climbing or previous outdoor sessions. This ensures you are comfortable with the basics before moving into more independent skills.
Participants should be prepared for two full days outdoors and willing to take on more responsibility during the course. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult throughout.
More than 10 years of coaching experience supports a clear and practical approach to building independence outdoors. Emphasis is placed on understanding systems properly so you can use them confidently beyond the course.
Small group sizes ensure plenty of hands-on practice and direct feedback. Sessions are structured to build confidence step by step, helping you develop the judgement needed to climb safely without relying on an instructor.
