Stand Up Paddleboard coaching is a growing field, and this two-day training course is ideal for those looking to lead sessions in calm, sheltered waters. Designed for aspiring SUP coaches, the course builds on previous coaching experience and gives you the discipline-specific tools to progress toward assessment. It’s suitable for anyone coaching beginners or developing intermediate paddlers in club or commercial settings.
Across two full days, you’ll cover the key elements of coaching Stand Up Paddleboarding in a sheltered water environment. This includes understanding technical skill development, structuring safe and effective sessions, and tailoring your coaching style to meet the needs of a variety of paddlers. You’ll also refine your ability to analyse performance and offer meaningful feedback that helps learners progress.
The focus is on how to coach, not just what to coach. This includes developing clear progressions for skills, identifying individual learning needs, and using observation and reflective practice to improve your delivery. Sessions are a mixture of on-water practice and discussion, where you’ll explore everything from goal-setting and session structure to the best ways to engage learners and support skill retention. This is not an assessment—it's about helping you grow into a more confident and capable coach.
The course will take place at a sheltered water venue in South West England, such as a lake or calm river environment. These sites are chosen to suit a variety of paddling and coaching conditions.
You’ll receive the exact location and joining instructions upon booking. All sites are selected based on safety, access, and suitability for SUP coaching.
Participants must be 16 or older and must have already completed the Paddle UK Core Coach Training. A Paddle Explore Award is recommended but not mandatory.
You’ll also need to hold a current Full Membership with Paddle UK, a valid 1-day First Aid certificate dated within 3 years, and completed Safeguarding Training also dated within 3 years. Without these, you won’t be able to go on to assessment after the training.
This training is delivered by an experienced provider with a long history of running high-quality paddlesport coaching. With roots in outdoor education going back to the 1980s, the team brings decades of insight into what makes effective, enjoyable learning on the water. Their focus is on creating courses that are safe, inclusive, and tailored to the needs of aspiring coaches.
Each session is led by instructors who combine technical knowledge with a genuine enthusiasm for helping others develop. The atmosphere is friendly and encouraging, with space for discussion, experimentation, and feedback. Whether you're aiming to coach independently or through a centre, you'll leave with practical tools and increased confidence in your ability to support paddlers.
To be eligible, you must meet the following prerequisites:
