Incident work, rescues and surf landings sit at the centre of this two-day intermediate block, for paddlers who already know the boat and want to manage a change in wind or tide. Day one builds control, then moves into open water and deep-water rescue. Day two practises landing on rock and in small surf, towing, and how to call for help if a trip goes wrong.
Meet at Polly Steps or the slip we confirm for that morning, get kit fitted, and hear how the tide is working. Day one stays technical in slower water first, then moves into open water and rescue practice. Day two puts those habits into landings, towing and group communication on a journey of about 12 to 16 km across the two days.
Venues may include the Teign, Oddicombe, Meadfoot, Paignton backwaters, Brixham and Berry Head, or Dart access, depending on the forecast. Both days finish so you can go home overnight. We send each morning's pin before you travel.
Polly Steps Car Park on the River Teign, Teignmouth, TQ14 0DJ, is the usual first meeting point. The estuary gives slower water for control work before a move to more open coast.
If the syllabus or the wind needs a different slip, the pin comes before you travel. Parking notes sit with that message. There is no cafe on the slip, so pack lunch and water.
Eighteen and over. You should already be a confident sea kayaker, comfortable in wind around force 3 to 4, and familiar with a basic self-rescue. This block is not a first sit in a touring boat.
Tell us recent trips when you request dates. Bring lunch, water and layers for two long days. Both days finish so you can go home overnight.
Coaches here work these coasts through the year, so rescue and landing drills match real Teign and Torbay water rather than a pool script. Groups stay small enough that everyone gets time in the water on the rescue.
You may train in our fleet or bring the boat you already paddle. Either way, the two days are built around incidents you might actually meet on a day trip, not a lecture on the sand.
The usual first meeting point is Polly Steps Car Park, River Teign, Teignmouth, TQ14 0DJ. We confirm the pin and parking notes when we approve your dates.
Day two may use a different slip. Check your messages the evening before each morning so you are not driving to the wrong water.
A confident sea kayaker, comfortable in wind around force 3 to 4, with a basic self-rescue already in place. The two days add incident work, not a first forward stroke.
Tell us recent trips when you request dates. We will say whether this block matches what you have already done.
Day one builds control in slower water, then moves into open water and self and assisted deep-water rescue. Day two practises incident thinking, towing, rock landings and launching or landing in small surf.
The exact mix follows tide and wind. Coaches link each drill to how you would use it on a real day trip.
Usually Polly Steps Car Park, River Teign, Teignmouth, TQ14 0DJ. Parking notes come with the pin when we approve your dates.
Day two may use Oddicombe, Meadfoot, Paignton, Brixham or a Dart slip if that water suits the syllabus. Check messages the evening before.
About 12 to 16 km across the two days, split between drills and journey legs rather than one long crossing for its own sake.
Exact mileage follows the group and the forecast. Quality of the rescue and landing work matters more than chasing distance.
Yes. Many people want rescue practice on the boat they already paddle. Tell us when you request dates so we can confirm the craft suits the planned water.
Coaches can also work outfitting, skeg and loading on that boat. If you prefer our fleet, say so before you travel.
Eighteen. The days include open-water rescue and landing work that is written for adults, so younger paddlers would not have the baseline the drills need.
Share any health notes when you request dates so coaches can plan pacing and venue choice for both mornings.
Bookable groups run between two and six. One-person, two-person, four-person and six-person options are shown when you request dates.
Tell us your headcount in advance. Extra people cannot join on the slip without warning.
A sea kayak, paddle, buoyancy aid and technical clothing when the weather turns, unless you have arranged to train in your own boat.
Bring lunch, water and layers for sitting between drills. Leave phones in the car unless you have a case you are happy to get wet.
A packed lunch, plenty of water, swimwear or quick-dry layers, warm clothes, old or wet shoes, a towel, sun cream and a hat.
Transport to each morning's launch is not included. Pack a bag for wet kit at the end of each day.
We swap venues or keep drills in slower water if wind or swell makes the planned landings unsafe. Rain alone does not stop the course.
We contact you as early as we can if a morning pin has to change. Safety on the rescue and landing work guides that call.

Absolutely brilliant experience, would highly recommend to everyone!
Kieran was an organised, pleasant, knowledgeable and interesting tour guide. Also clearly, a very good kayaka. The only critique would be the size of the group. It was just too long to get everyone geared up and at the cave for all kayaks to go into and out. Otherwise a…
Great, good local knowledge, friendly instructor. Lots of wildlife and little adventures had. Recommend.
Amazing experience, would highly recommend to anyone!
Jose was very friendly and helpful! The bikes he provided were great for the price, and we enjoyed a unique gravel bike adventure in Spain. There were very few other companies offering gravel bike rentals. I would 100% recommend this adventure with Jose to any travelers in Spain looking to…
It was really enjoyable. I had never done kayaking before but after some short, simple clear instruction I was confidently making it way along the coastline. It was great to see things from the water you would've otherwise have been able to get a view of. I would definitely do…
Excellent day out with super efficient Kieran and Sam. Even a novice like me finally cracked the code to a good kayaking. The caves, guided tour on geological formations punctuated by marshmallow roasting and fossil hunting truly enhanced the overall experience. Would love to do it again. Plus - a…
