Enjoy a full-day guided adventure on a sea kayak or stand-up paddleboard in Portland area and along the Dorset coastline. Suitable for beginners through to experienced paddlers, this trip follows an established route designed to highlight the harbour’s best sights and wildlife, offering a relaxed yet engaging experience on the water.
The trip begins with a full safety briefing and familiarisation with your craft and equipment. Once on the water, you’ll follow a guided route in Portland, taking in historic sites, the harbour’s busy water-sport activity, and unique wildlife. Your guide will offer opportunities to get close to seals and, if you’re lucky, the resident Portland dolphins. The pace of the trip is designed to be enjoyable, giving time for photography, observing nature, and stopping at a local café if desired.
The journey may continue along the renowned Chesil Fleet, a calm lagoon teeming with wildlife, before exploring other scenic sections of the Dorset coastline as conditions allow. The guides can also arrange trips further along the Jurassic Coast or in inland rivers on request. The emphasis throughout is on small group experiences, allowing the trip to be tailored to participants’ abilities and ensuring everyone receives individual attention. Equipment including paddle, buoyancy aid, and a dry bag is provided; participants just need to bring suitable clothing, snacks, and packed lunch for a full day.
Trips depart from Portland, with options along the immediate Dorset coastline. Portland Harbour offers sheltered waters ideal for safe exploration, while nearby bays and lagoons provide scenic and wildlife-rich environments. Conditions are generally calm, but your guide will adapt routes according to tide, wind, and group experience.
For those seeking further adventure, trips can be arranged along the Jurassic Coast in open water or on nearby rivers. These areas offer more challenging paddling conditions and expansive views, giving participants the chance to experience a variety of coastal and inland paddling environments.
Trips are open to anyone aged 12+ who can paddle a kayak or SUP. Beginners are welcome, though some basic fitness is recommended to comfortably manage a full-day paddle.
Children under 12 may find full-size kayaks challenging, and the small group structure ensures that the trip pace suits the participants’ abilities. All participants are encouraged to bring weather-appropriate clothing and any personal items needed for comfort on the water.
Trips are run in small groups of 1–3 paddlers, ensuring personal guidance, flexibility, and maximum support throughout the day. This approach also allows for tailored routes, giving every participant the opportunity to enjoy the sights, wildlife, and activity at their own pace.
Guides are highly experienced and knowledgeable about the local area, providing insight into the history, wildlife, and geography of Portland Harbour and the Dorset coastline. The combination of expert guidance, small groups, and full provision of equipment makes for a safe, enjoyable, and memorable paddling experience.
