Winter water at Lannacombe is the classroom for this one-day advanced course: tidal movement, surf, swell and incident work up to force 4, with one or two paddlers and a coach. The day is for people who already paddle 12 to 16 km, recover from a capsize in deep water, and handle surf. Kit is fitted on the sand before you launch into the features that sit on this stretch of South Devon coast.
Meet on the sand at Lannacombe, get a boat that fits, and hear how the tide and swell are working. Coaching starts with control in the features you can reach that day, then moves into rescue, rock landings and towing when the water allows. The ratio stays at one-to-one or two-to-one so the coach can stay beside you.
Dates run from 1 October to 17 March, when this beach has the winter water the syllabus needs. We confirm the clock time and parking pin when we approve your date. Pack lunch and water; the day is on the beach and afloat, not in a classroom.
Lannacombe sits on the South Devon coast near Start Point, with surf, swell and tidal movement that you will not find on a sheltered Torbay sand launch. This beach is the meeting point for the whole day.
Access is by the lane down to the beach. We send the pin and a note on parking when we approve your date. There is no beach cafe operation here, so come ready for a full day outdoors.
Eighteen and over only. You should already paddle 12 to 16 km comfortably, recover from a capsize in deep water, and handle surf and swell up to force 4. Skeg use and helping another paddler should already be familiar.
Tell us recent trips when you request a date so we can judge whether the winter water at Lannacombe is the right next step. Bring lunch, water and layers for sitting on a winter beach between drills.
Groups stay at one or two, which keeps the coach close enough to work rescues and rock landings without a queue. The syllabus is written for this beach in winter, not copied from a summer bay session.
Kit is issued on the sand, including technical layers for a cold day. You leave with a clearer sense of how to manage the craft when the sea state changes, on water chosen for that work.
Meet at Lannacombe Beach. We send the pin and a note on parking when we approve your date. The lane down to the beach is narrow, so allow extra time.
Look for the coach and boats on the sand. Come a few minutes early so kit and the brief do not eat into water time.
Comfort on 12 to 16 km journeys, a reliable deep-water capsize recovery, and time in surf and swell up to force 4. Skeg use and helping another paddler should already be familiar.
Tell us recent trips when you request a date. We would rather hear that on the form than discover a gap on a winter beach.
Lannacombe holds the tidal and surf features this syllabus uses during the winter window. The day is written for that water, not for a calm summer cove.
Dates run from 1 October to 17 March. We confirm the clock when we approve your date.
One or two paddlers with a coach. The one-to-one and two-to-one options are shown when you request a date.
Tell us which ratio you want in advance. Extra people cannot join on the sand without warning.
Lannacombe Beach is the meeting point for the whole day. We send the pin and a note on parking when we approve your date, including how the lane down to the sand works.
The lane is narrow, so allow extra time on a busy winter morning. Come to the sand ready to change so kit and the brief do not eat into water time.
Solo paddling in swell and tidal movement, deep-water rescue, rock landings, towing, and how to pick a way back when the sea state changes.
The exact mix follows the tide and swell on the day. The coach stays beside you rather than running a queue of drills.
A sea kayak, paddle, buoyancy aid and technical clothing suited to a winter day. Everything is fitted on the sand before you launch.
Bring lunch, water and warm layers for sitting between drills. Leave phones in the car unless you have a case you are happy to get wet.
A packed lunch, plenty of water, warm layers, a towel, old or wet shoes, and a hat or gloves if you feel the cold.
Transport to Lannacombe is not included. There is no cafe on this beach, so pack as if you will be outdoors all day.
Yes, if the craft suits the planned water. Tell us when you request a date so we can confirm outfitting and loading.
Many people train in our fleet so the coach can match the boat to the features. Either way, say so before you travel.
We shorten or reshape the drills if wind or swell makes the planned features unsafe. Rain alone does not stop a winter day at Lannacombe.
We contact you as early as we can if the start has to move. Check messages the evening before if you are travelling a long way.
No. The day assumes you already paddle distance, recover from a capsize, and handle surf. First-timers would not have the baseline the drills need.
If you are unsure, send a short note about recent trips when you request a date. We will say whether this winter water is the right step.

Absolutely brilliant experience, would highly recommend to everyone!
Kieran was an organised, pleasant, knowledgeable and interesting tour guide. Also clearly, a very good kayaka. The only critique would be the size of the group. It was just too long to get everyone geared up and at the cave for all kayaks to go into and out. Otherwise a…
Great, good local knowledge, friendly instructor. Lots of wildlife and little adventures had. Recommend.
Amazing experience, would highly recommend to anyone!
Jose was very friendly and helpful! The bikes he provided were great for the price, and we enjoyed a unique gravel bike adventure in Spain. There were very few other companies offering gravel bike rentals. I would 100% recommend this adventure with Jose to any travelers in Spain looking to…
It was really enjoyable. I had never done kayaking before but after some short, simple clear instruction I was confidently making it way along the coastline. It was great to see things from the water you would've otherwise have been able to get a view of. I would definitely do…
Excellent day out with super efficient Kieran and Sam. Even a novice like me finally cracked the code to a good kayaking. The caves, guided tour on geological formations punctuated by marshmallow roasting and fossil hunting truly enhanced the overall experience. Would love to do it again. Plus - a…
