A one-day advanced course at Lannacombe Beach for experienced paddlers ready for tidal movement, surf, swell and incident management up to force 4.
Work on solo paddling, deep-water self-rescue, rock landings, towing and communication tools including VHF awareness. The day develops coping strategies when conditions change quickly.
By the end you should plan trips more confidently and manage common coastal scenarios. Fuel surcharges may apply on motorboat support days and are shown at checkout where relevant.
Babbacombe Beach alongside Oddicombe Beach is a sheltered cove on the English Riviera with clean water and Blue Flag recognition stretching back 37 years. SW winds are blocked here, so the bay stays calmer than much of the open coast and feels more Mediterranean than many Devon beaches.
You launch straight from the sand with caves nearby and regular seal encounters in season. Parking sits close to the beach, and our team is on hand for kit, a safety brief, and advice on the marked paddling area before you head out.
Ages 18 and over only, with significant prior experience including 12 to 16 km journeys, confident capsize recovery and paddling in surf and swell.
Proficiency with skeg use and assisting other paddlers is expected. A VHF course and tidal navigation module pair well with this training.
Make your trip to the English Riviera an unforgettable experience by visiting Torbay's premier beach. We offer first-class equipment, friendly staff, professional beach hire services, expert tuition, free lockers, changing rooms, a beach shower and exceptional coffee when you are off the water.
Our instructors and beach team know Babbacombe Bay inside out, from sheltered corners on breezy days to the best stretches for beginners. They fit buoyancy aids, talk through local conditions, and help you choose the right craft so you feel confident on the water.
You should already paddle 12 to 16 km comfortably, recover from capsizes in deep water, and handle surf, swell and wind up to force 4.
If you are unsure, tell us your recent trips when you request a date and we will advise whether advanced training is appropriate.
Lannacombe offers the tidal and surf features we use for advanced training during the winter programme window.
Dates outside this window may be redirected to other coaching products better suited to summer conditions.
Your session starts on the beach with kit issue and a safety brief tailored to the day's conditions. Your instructor or guide stays with the group throughout, coaching skills on the sand and on the water so everyone can progress at a comfortable pace.
Routes stay inside sheltered Babbacombe Bay unless the product description takes you further along the coast when the sea state allows. There is time to rest, ask questions, and take in caves, wildlife, and the Blue Flag water that makes Oddicombe a favourite with locals.
Guided sessions include your instructor or skipper, technical equipment for the activity, and a safety brief on the beach or at the boat.
Oilskin jackets or similar are provided where the product description lists them. Changing rooms are available at the beach base.
Bring swimwear or quick-dry layers, sun cream, a hat, and drinking water. Longer tours may need snacks and extra layers.
Wetsuits are optional for many sessions unless you feel the cold. Dry bags can be rented on site.
Session suitability is shown on your chosen product. Beginners are welcome on many tours and lessons when you are happy to get wet and try kneeling or standing with guidance.
Listen to your instructor, stay with the group unless told otherwise, and let us know before the session if anyone in your party has medical needs or limited swimming confidence.

Absolutely brilliant experience, would highly recommend to everyone!
Kieran was an organised, pleasant, knowledgeable and interesting tour guide. Also clearly, a very good kayaka. The only critique would be the size of the group. It was just too long to get everyone geared up and at the cave for all kayaks to go into and out. Otherwise a…
Great, good local knowledge, friendly instructor. Lots of wildlife and little adventures had. Recommend.
Amazing experience, would highly recommend to anyone!
Jose was very friendly and helpful! The bikes he provided were great for the price, and we enjoyed a unique gravel bike adventure in Spain. There were very few other companies offering gravel bike rentals. I would 100% recommend this adventure with Jose to any travelers in Spain looking to…
It was really enjoyable. I had never done kayaking before but after some short, simple clear instruction I was confidently making it way along the coastline. It was great to see things from the water you would've otherwise have been able to get a view of. I would definitely do…
Excellent day out with super efficient Kieran and Sam. Even a novice like me finally cracked the code to a good kayaking. The caves, guided tour on geological formations punctuated by marshmallow roasting and fossil hunting truly enhanced the overall experience. Would love to do it again. Plus - a…
