PADI Basic Freediver is where breath-hold diving stops being a party trick and starts being a skill. You learn to relax on a single breath, move efficiently through the water, and dive with a buddy who knows what to watch for. No scuba kit and no cylinders, just you, a line, a low-volume mask, and a lot of coaching on breathing.
This is the confined-water foundation of the full PADI Freediver programme. You work in a pool or sheltered site on static apnea, holding still underwater, and dynamic apnea, swimming on one breath. Depth comes later. Technique comes first, and your instructor will drill breathing cycles until they feel boring, which is when they start working.
Most centres run eLearning at home, typically five to ten hours, then two to four days of pool sessions. The numbers sound intimidating until your instructor walks you through relaxation. Ninety seconds of breath-hold feels impossible on day one and ordinary by day three for most students, and that is normal.
Basic Freediver is assessed in the water against PADI performance requirements, not in a classroom exam.

Encuentra actividadesIt is PADI's confined-water introduction to freediving — breath-hold diving without scuba equipment. You learn relaxation, finning, equalisation and safety on a line or in a pool, working toward static and dynamic apnea performance goals.
On adventuro this is listed as Level 1 Freediver. The PADI card you receive is Basic Freediver, which is the first stage of the full PADI Freediver pathway.
No. This course is designed for beginners with adequate swimming ability and good health. Snorkelling experience helps but is not required.
If you trained with SSI or another agency, leave a comment when you book with your certification details. Centres often accept equivalent prior training for progression courses, though Basic Freediver itself expects no prior freediving card.
eLearning is typically five to ten hours at home. In-water training usually runs over two to four days depending on the centre and how quickly the group meets performance requirements.
Apnea training is not something you rush. Centres may add sessions if the group needs more rest or coaching time.
When taught properly with a qualified instructor, constant buddy supervision and no hyperventilation, yes. The course emphasises recognising limits and aborting dives early.
Never practise breath-holds alone in a pool or open water. Shallow-water blackout is real and often silent. That is why buddy protocols are drilled from session one.
Basic Freediver is confined water only — pool or sheltered site. You are not doing open-water depth dives on this certification.
Depth progression comes with full PADI Freediver training after you have solid confined-water skills. Do not book this course expecting to hit 16 metres on holiday.
Centres usually provide or rent long fins, low-volume mask, snorkel, wetsuit and weight belt. Bring a swimsuit and towel at minimum.
If you have your own mask, bring it — fit matters more in freediving than in casual snorkelling. Ask the centre what is included before you pay.
Very common. Most students feel an intense urge to breathe long before they are actually low on oxygen. Your instructor teaches you to distinguish discomfort from danger.
Leave a comment when you book if you want a patient coach or have had a bad experience in the water before. Nobody is judged for needing extra time at this level.
Twelve years old for PADI Basic Freediver. Children aged 8 and up can start with PADI Skin Diver, which covers snorkelling and short breath-hold dips without full freediving certification.
Some centres set a higher minimum for apnea training. Ask when you book for younger teenagers.
Progress to full PADI Freediver for open-water depth training, or continue toward Advanced Freediver once you hold the prerequisite certification.
Many students also join supervised pool sessions or freediving clubs to build experience before pushing depth.
Similar entry-level outcomes, different agency cards. PADI Basic Freediver is confined water with specific performance goals. SSI runs its own Basic Freediver programme with comparable safety standards.
Your centre on adventuro confirms which agency they teach. Both are internationally recognised for recreational freediving progression.
adventuro lists PADI freediving centres offering Basic Freediver at pools and coastal venues. Compare whether eLearning, kit hire and extra pool time are included.
Pool training in the UK builds technique before you spend money on a warm-water depth holiday. Both approaches work if the instructor coaches to PADI standards.
