What is Mountain Training?

Mountain Training sets the national standards for hill walking, mountaineering and rock climbing skills and leadership in the UK and Ireland. It does not run courses itself; approved providers deliver training and assessment against published syllabi, with experience logged in the Mountain Training digital logbook (DLOG).

Awards range from one-day skills courses such as Hill Skills through to leadership qualifications like Lowland Leader and Mountain Leader, and instructor awards including Rock Climbing Instructor. The structure is consistent wherever you train, though local terrain and weather shape how each course feels on the ground.

Choosing a course

Match the award to your ambition and experience. Hill Skills suits beginners who want safer days on the fells; Lowland Leader and Mountain Leader are for people leading groups and require logged quality days before assessment. Rock Climbing Instructor is a professional instructing qualification, not a personal climbing grade.
