Multi-Pitch Award is Mountain Training's qualification for supervising multi-pitch rock climbing with groups in non-tidal outdoor crags. You are already a competent Rock Climbing Instructor. This scheme teaches you to manage long routes, belay stations, abseil descents and the slow chaos that happens when three climbers, two ropes and a hanging belay all need decisions at once.
Training is a minimum of twenty hours over two days, followed by consolidation on real multi-pitch routes and a two-day assessment. Mountaineering Ireland and Mountain Training England share the syllabus. You need at least fifteen logged multi-pitch leads at Severe or above and a year of experience since qualifying as RCI before assessment feels fair.
Multi-pitch days are long and mentally tiring. That is normal. The award does not make you a mountain guide. It authorises supervised multi-pitch climbing within scheme scope and your employer's insurance. Good judgement on a windy stance is worth more than a fast lead through.
Multi-Pitch Award assessment is two days of practical evaluation on multi-pitch rock. Assessors observe supervision, rope work and decision-making against Mountain Training standards.
