Copán department is Copán Ruinas and the highland bowl around it. You come for the Maya site and stay for cooler trails, coffee country and a town that still functions as a walking base. It's a different Honduras from Roatán: earlier mornings, jumpers at night, no dive shop on the corner.
Site walks and highland trails
Give the ruins a full morning, then use the afternoon for hiking on finca tracks and ridge paths. Birding is a serious reason to linger. Celaque is a separate day in Lempira, not a Copán Ruinas stroll. Two or three nights is the useful stay.
Getting here
Road from San Pedro Sula, or a shuttle that eats a half day. Don't connect from a dawn island flight and expect a sunset ruin visit. Open the Book here tab for walks in Copán and the western highlands.
