The South East has more powerboats per square mile of navigable water than any other region in Britain, which is both a fact and a reasonable description of a Saturday afternoon on the Solent. The Thames, the South Coast and the estuaries of Kent and Essex accommodate a significant proportion of the UK's recreational powerboating fleet — from RYA training boats on inland reservoirs to RIBs doing 35 knots off Brighton Marina.
RYA Powerboat Level 2
The RYA Powerboat Level 2 is the starting point: a two-day course covering boat handling, basic navigation, safety procedures and man-overboard recovery. It qualifies you to take charge of a powerboat in familiar waters by daylight — a licence equivalent that charter and hire companies across the UK and Europe recognise. Most courses run on inland reservoirs or harbours; some centres run theirs from marina bases with access to coastal waters.
Thames RIB experiences
Thames Rockets and Thames RIB Experience operate high-speed RIB excursions on the tidal Thames — up to 70kph between the bridges of central London, with views of the city from water level and commentary that includes the sorts of historical detail that tourist boats miss. Not a qualification course; simply one of the better things you can do with an afternoon in London. Suitable for groups, corporate events and people who want to get somewhere fast while looking at things.
Advanced qualifications
Beyond Powerboat Level 2, the RYA Coastal Skipper powerboat qualification and the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) are available through several South East centres. Offshore powerboating and RIB operations for those heading into more challenging coastal environments require specific training; several centres in the region specialise in this progression.
