Mountain biking in the South West is easy to underestimate from the outside. The landscape is predominantly coastal rather than alpine, but the region has quietly developed some of the best purpose-built singletrack in England alongside a network of bridleways that drop through wooded valleys, skirt moorland edges and occasionally end at a pub.
Where to ride
The New Forest, straddling the Hampshire/Dorset border, is the most rider-dense part of the region — well-maintained gravel and natural trails through ancient woodland, appropriate for all abilities and particularly good for families. Dartmoor and Exmoor offer high moorland riding with panoramic views at the cost of more technical terrain and, often, significantly more mud. Haldon Forest near Exeter runs waymarked trails from blue to black grade with a popular skills loop.
Trail types
Green and blue trails dominate the gentler parts of the region — New Forest bridleways, Exmoor valley routes and forest tracks. Red-grade singletrack is available at Haldon, on some Dartmoor trails and across the Quantock Hills in Somerset. The terrain is generally flowing rather than highly technical, though moorland riding adds navigation and weather variables that pure trail centres remove. Road cycling and gravel riding blend frequently with mountain biking in the South West, and several centres offer gravel or bikepacking guiding.
Guided rides and skills sessions
Guided rides in the New Forest and on Dartmoor are particularly popular for visitors unfamiliar with the area — it's easy to navigate badly on open moorland, and a guide changes the experience considerably. Skills coaching sessions, covering cornering technique, braking, climbing and descending, are offered at a number of centres and are worthwhile even for experienced riders who've developed habits on similar terrain.
When to go
Spring and autumn are the most reliable for trail conditions. Summer riding is good on higher terrain but the New Forest gets busy with walkers and cyclists during school holidays. Winter is perfectly possible on a well-set-up hardtail or enduro bike; expect mud and factor in shorter daylight accordingly.
