A canoe is the relaxed, roomy way onto the water. You sit or kneel high in an open boat and paddle with a single blade, and there is space for a friend, a dog or a week's worth of camping kit. It is the classic choice for gentle rivers, lakes and proper expeditions.

The basics come quickly on calm water, and the social side is a big part of the appeal, since two people can paddle and natter at the same time. From there you can build into moving water and longer journeys.
