Overview

The South East of England is traversed by a remarkable network of navigable waterways: the Thames and its tributaries, the Norfolk Broads, the Medway, the Cam, and the Oxford Canal network that links the Midlands to the Thames Valley. Much of this water is calm, tidal only in the lower reaches, and passes through landscapes that range from central London to the quiet Oxfordshire countryside. For open canoeists this is an unusually rich region — you can paddle through Oxford, camp on Thames islands, or explore the quiet backwaters of the Norfolk Broads largely without encountering the kind of boat traffic that dominates the main channels.

The Thames and its tributaries

The non-tidal Thames above Teddington Lock is the backbone of South East canoeing. From the Cotswold springs above Lechlade to the tidal boundary at Richmond, the river passes through some of the most historically layered landscape in England: Oxford's spires, the Henley reach, Windsor Castle, Runnymede. The river is busy with hire boats in summer, but quiet stretches are easy to find with local knowledge — early mornings on the Oxfordshire reaches, in particular, can be exceptional. Several weirs and lock portages punctuate the route; they are manageable but require care, especially in high water.

The Oxford Canal and Broads

The Oxford Canal from Coventry to Oxford offers a gentler alternative — narrowboat-paced, with working locks, canal-side pubs and a pace of travel that suits an open canoe rather than fighting tidal Thames current. Norfolk's Broads provide a completely different environment: broad, shallow lakes connected by slow rivers in a landscape that sits below sea level, with extraordinary biodiversity and the permanent presence of wind. Canoeing the Broads in autumn, when the summer cruiser traffic drops away, is a particular pleasure.
