The north coast is the wet, green counterpart to the islands. Cloud forest rises behind La Ceiba. The Cangrejal runs white water when the rains come. Boat days reach Cayos Cochinos. You'll use Atlántida as the activity core, Cortés as the San Pedro Sula airport, and Colón if you want a quieter Garifuna coast toward the Mosquitia.
Rainforest, river and cayes
Pico Bonito hiking is the headline on land. Trails mud from June to November, which is also when rafting on the Cangrejal is at its best. Tela and La Ceiba run snorkel boats to Cayos Cochinos when the sea allows. This is not a dry-season-only region. You pick the week for the sport you want.
Bases and transfers
La Ceiba is the useful town: lodges on the Cangrejal, the Utila ferry, and Pico Bonito trailheads. San Pedro Sula in Cortés is the international airport, not a place you need to linger. Trujillo in Colón is a slower coastal add-on, not a substitute for Pico Bonito. Combining this region with the Bay Islands is the classic split.
