Major bleeding emergencies can happen in workplaces, public settings and everyday situations where rapid action is critical. This practical course teaches the knowledge and techniques needed to control severe bleeding using tourniquets and haemostatic dressings, helping you respond confidently when every second matters.
During the session, you'll learn the principles behind catastrophic bleeding control and understand why early intervention can significantly improve outcomes. Training covers current guidance, recent rule changes and the decision-making process involved in choosing between tourniquets, haemostatic dressings and trauma dressings.
Practical instruction focuses on a range of commonly used tourniquets, including CAT, SOFT-T, MAT and SAM XT models. You'll learn how each device works, when it should be used and how to apply it correctly under pressure. The course also explores improvised tourniquets, situations where a second tourniquet may be required and the potential complications associated with incorrect use.
Attention then turns to haemostatic products and wound-packing techniques. Participants are introduced to products such as Celox Gauze, Celox A and other haemostatic agents, alongside practical guidance on packing wounds and managing casualties suffering from major blood loss. The course concludes with patient monitoring considerations, recognising shock and understanding what actions should be taken while awaiting emergency medical assistance.
Training can be delivered at a workplace, community venue or suitable home location, making it easy to arrange learning around your organisation's needs. Sessions are structured to provide professional instruction while remaining accessible and engaging for learners of all experience levels.
Coverage includes Buckinghamshire and many surrounding areas, including Aylesbury, High Wycombe, Amersham, The Chalfonts, Buckingham, Milton Keynes, Tring, Berkhamsted, Hertford, St. Albans, Oxford, Watford and Northampton. This flexible approach allows groups to receive training at a convenient location without unnecessary travel.
No previous first aid qualifications are required. The course is suitable for workplace staff, volunteers, community groups and individuals who want to learn how to manage severe bleeding emergencies.
Practical elements are included throughout the training, but instructors provide guidance at every stage. Learners are encouraged to participate at their own pace while building confidence in these potentially life-saving skills.
Delivered by frontline medics with extensive emergency service experience, training combines recognised course content with practical insight gained from real incidents. Learners benefit from instruction that goes beyond theory and focuses on how these techniques are applied in genuine emergency situations.
Every course is accredited, professionally structured and designed to build confidence through practical learning. Small group training helps ensure participants receive individual support while developing skills they can use when it matters most.
A tourniquet is a device designed to stop severe bleeding from a limb by applying pressure to blood vessels. It is typically used when direct pressure alone is not sufficient to control life-threatening blood loss.
During the course, you'll learn when tourniquets should be used, how to apply them correctly and the precautions that should be taken to ensure they remain effective and safe.
Haemostatic dressings are specialised products designed to help blood clot more quickly when applied to a wound. They are often used in situations involving severe bleeding where standard dressings may not be enough.
Training covers several commonly used haemostatic products and explains how they work, when they should be used and how they fit into modern bleeding control procedures.
This course is suitable for anyone who may need to respond to a severe bleeding emergency. It is particularly valuable for workplace first aiders, security personnel, volunteers, outdoor instructors and community groups.
No medical background is necessary. The content is delivered in a way that makes complex subjects understandable for beginners while remaining valuable for those with existing first aid experience.
Upon successful completion, participants receive a digital certificate that remains valid for three years. This provides evidence of training and demonstrates the skills covered during the course.
Learners also receive a Certified CPD certificate and access to additional resources that can help support ongoing learning and professional development.
Several widely used commercial tourniquets are discussed throughout the training, including CAT, SOFT-T, MAT and SAM XT devices. The course examines how each system operates and the situations in which they may be used.
Understanding different designs helps participants become familiar with equipment they may encounter in workplaces, public trauma kits or emergency response environments.
Yes. Wound packing forms an important part of the practical training and is particularly relevant for deep wounds where direct pressure may not adequately control bleeding.
Participants learn how to pack wounds correctly, how haemostatic products can be incorporated into treatment and what ongoing monitoring should take place after treatment has been applied.
Recognising and responding to shock is included within the training programme. Severe blood loss can quickly lead to shock, making early identification an important skill.
You'll learn common signs and symptoms to look for, along with the actions that can help support a casualty while professional medical assistance is on the way.
Yes. Courses can be delivered directly at your workplace, a community venue or another suitable location. This allows groups to receive training in a familiar and convenient setting.
On-site delivery can also make scheduling easier and reduce travel requirements, particularly for businesses wishing to train several members of staff together.
