Enjoy an hour of self-guided kayaking in a single sit-on-top kayak in the sheltered waters of Oppy Bay. Ideal for beginners or anyone seeking a relaxed solo paddle, this session gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace while building confidence on the water in a safe, controlled environment.
Start with a safety briefing to cover water hazards, basic kayak control, and emergency procedures. Once familiar with your equipment, launch from the accessible banks of Oppy Bay and paddle independently within the designated area.
The bay’s calm and sheltered conditions make it ideal for building confidence, practising turning and stopping, or simply enjoying the scenery. This is a flexible, self-guided session, allowing you to explore the bay at your own speed without formal instruction.
Sessions are held in Oppy Bay, a designated area within the Forest Row reservoir. The bay has clear boundaries for independent paddling and bank-side access for easy launching and returning.
The sheltered waters offer a safe environment for beginners and casual paddlers. Lifeguards and safety staff are available nearby to provide oversight and ensure a secure experience on the water.
No previous kayaking experience is required. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult either in the water or supervising from the shore. Paddlers should feel comfortable moving in water and have basic swimming ability.
A buoyancy aid must be worn at all times. Participants should wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing that can get wet, including sun protection or thermal layers for cooler conditions.
Oppy Bay provides a calm, safe, and controlled environment for independent kayaking. Its sheltered waters and clear boundaries allow beginners to gain confidence while experienced paddlers can enjoy a relaxing solo paddle.
The bay is designed to encourage safe skill development, exploration, and enjoyment, with bank-side access and staff support for reassurance. Whether it’s practising techniques or enjoying a quiet hour afloat, the bay offers a secure, flexible experience.
No experience is needed. The bay’s calm, sheltered waters are ideal for beginners. You’ll have the freedom to learn basic steering, stopping, and balance techniques while remaining in a safe, controlled environment.
Experienced paddlers can also use the session to practise manoeuvres or enjoy a quiet hour on the water. The area is designed to give everyone a relaxed, flexible experience.
Each session includes a buoyancy aid, paddle, and kayak. Staff provide a short briefing covering water hazards, basic manoeuvres, and what to do if you capsize.
Buoyancy aids support flotation, and participants are advised to wear appropriate clothing. Guidance on safely re-boarding your kayak after a fall is also provided to ensure confidence while paddling independently.
Yes, children aged 3 and above may hire a kayak, but an adult must accompany them on site. Adults can be on the water in a separate kayak or supervising from the shore.
This supervision ensures young paddlers can explore safely while practising independence and control. Adults can assist with launching and returning, giving reassurance where needed.
The hire is strictly for one person per kayak to ensure safety and space on the water.
Groups can hire multiple kayaks if required, but each paddler must have their own craft. This maintains a safe and relaxed environment for everyone in the bay.
Wear clothing suitable for getting wet, such as swimwear or sportswear, and footwear with grip for launching and returning safely.
Weather-appropriate layers are recommended. Sun protection is important in summer, while thermal layers or wetsuits may be needed for colder months.
This session is designed for calm waters only. The bay provides shelter from wind and waves, making it ideal for first-time paddlers or those wanting a peaceful session.
For more challenging conditions or extended routes, an instructed session is recommended. The bay ensures a safe, enjoyable experience.
