Enjoy a scenic paddle along the peaceful River Cuckmere on this guided kayak tour through the heart of the valley. This 4–5 hour return trip follows the winding tidal stretch from the Cuckmere Centre to the village of Alfriston, offering a great mix of gentle adventure and beautiful countryside views. It’s an ideal outing for those with some paddling experience, combining time on the water with a relaxed lunch stop before returning downstream.
The session begins at the Cuckmere Centre, where your instructor will go through a safety briefing and help everyone get set up with suitable equipment. Once on the water, you’ll follow the meandering river upstream towards Alfriston, surrounded by fields, reed beds, and the South Downs rising in the distance. The journey is calm and unhurried, allowing plenty of time to take in the scenery and enjoy the peaceful flow of the river.
Halfway through the trip, you’ll arrive in Alfriston—a charming Sussex village perfect for a short break. Paddlers can stretch their legs, have lunch, or enjoy a quick drink before heading back downstream on the ebbing tide. The return leg offers another chance to refine your paddling technique under the guidance of your instructor. With both sit-on-top kayaks and paddleboards available, it’s a comfortable and rewarding experience for anyone looking to spend a few hours exploring one of East Sussex’s most picturesque river valleys.
This tour takes place along the River Cuckmere, one of the most scenic waterways in East Sussex. The route runs through the Cuckmere Valley within the South Downs National Park, offering a peaceful paddling environment with gently flowing tidal water. The area is known for its wildlife, open meadows, and the distinctive meanders that make it such a favourite among local paddlers.
The trip starts and finishes at the Cuckmere Centre, conveniently located between Eastbourne and Seaford. It’s easily accessible by car, with free parking onsite and changing facilities available for all participants.
Participants should have basic paddling experience and be confident manoeuvring a kayak or stand-up paddleboard on calm water. If you’re new to paddlesports, completing a taster session beforehand is recommended to ensure you’re comfortable with the skills required for the trip.
You’ll need to be fit enough for several hours of relaxed paddling, including the return journey. All participants must be 16 or over, and those under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
The centre’s instructors are experienced and passionate about helping people enjoy time on the water safely. Their local knowledge ensures that every trip is well-planned around the tides and weather, giving you the best possible experience.
With quality equipment provided, a supportive environment, and a friendly team, the centre offers the perfect setting for exploring one of Sussex’s most beautiful waterways at your own pace.
You don’t need to be an expert, but you should have some basic paddling experience before joining. The tour involves several hours on the water, so you’ll need to be able to control your kayak, steer, and paddle comfortably for the duration.
If you’ve never paddled before, it’s best to join a shorter taster session first. These are available at the same location and are designed to build your confidence before taking part in longer trips like this one.
All paddling equipment is provided, including your kayak or board, buoyancy aid, and wetsuit if needed. You’ll just need to bring suitable footwear that can get wet—something secure like neoprene shoes or old trainers is ideal. Avoid crocs, heavy boots, or slip-on shoes.
It’s also a good idea to bring water, snacks, a packed lunch for the Alfriston stop, and a change of clothes for afterwards. There are changing facilities and showers available onsite.
Safety always comes first. If the weather conditions are unsuitable—such as high winds or heavy rain—the trip may be rescheduled to a safer date. The team will contact you in advance if this happens.
In mild or slightly breezy conditions, the trip usually goes ahead. The instructors are skilled at assessing the river and planning accordingly so you can still have a great experience.
The full experience typically lasts between four and five hours, including a relaxed stop in Alfriston for lunch or refreshments. Paddling time can vary slightly depending on the group’s pace and the tides on the day.
The journey is designed to be comfortable rather than strenuous, with plenty of time to enjoy the surroundings without rushing.
There’s always a small chance of getting wet, especially if you’re new to paddling or trying out turns. The river is calm and shallow in most areas, and instructors are nearby to assist if needed.
The sit-on-top kayaks used for this tour are stable and beginner-friendly, so most participants stay dry throughout the trip. Wearing a wetsuit also helps keep you warm if you do take a dip.
