RYA Online CEVNI Test

The RYA CEVNI Test is an online test designed to certify that you understand the European Code for Inland Waterways (CEVNI). This test is necessary to add the inland waterways endorsement to your International Certificate of Competence (ICC), which is a legal requirement for navigating European inland waterways.

Anyone who holds or is applying for the ICC and plans to navigate the inland waterways of Europe must pass the CEVNI Test. This includes boaters using canals, rivers, and other inland water routes across the continent.

The test covers essential inland waterways rules, including:

• Signs and signals specific to inland navigation
• Buoyage systems used on rivers and canals
• Right-of-way rules and traffic regulations
• Sound and light signals
• Navigation in locks and under bridges

The test is completed entirely online and is designed to ensure that you understand how to navigate safely and follow the rules of inland waterways.

We recommend studying the RYA CEVNI Handbook, which provides all the information you need to prepare for the test. The handbook is available for purchase from the RYA website and serves as a comprehensive guide to the signs, signals, and regulations of inland waterways.

The test is relatively short and typically takes around 1-2 hours to complete, including study time. You can study at your own pace and take the test when you feel ready.

Once you successfully complete the test, you will receive a certificate of completion. You can then submit this certificate to the RYA to have your ICC updated with the inland waterways endorsement. This will allow you to legally operate a boat on European inland waterways.

Once you book the test, we’ll email you a personal username and password to log into the online platform. You can take the test at your own pace from any location with internet access. If you encounter any issues or have questions, our instructors are available to help via email.

The CEVNI regulations are the core set of rules for navigating Europe’s inland waterways. Understanding and following these rules is essential for ensuring safe navigation in rivers, canals, and other inland routes. Passing the test ensures you are knowledgeable about these important regulations and can safely operate a vessel in these areas.
