Pedal along the River Thames on a relaxed two-hour guided mountain bike tour, taking in leafy towpaths, heritage landmarks, and scenic riverside views. With a qualified instructor leading the way, riders of all levels can enjoy a comfortable and sociable cycling experience in one of southwest London’s most beautiful areas. An optional e-bike upgrade is available for those who prefer a little extra power on the ride.
Your adventure begins with a short introduction and safety briefing before you head off beside the river. Following a calm and steady pace, the route winds along the Thames towpath, passing historic sites such as Ham House and Eel Pie Island. It’s a peaceful stretch with no traffic, perfect for taking in the scenery while learning a little about the local history from your instructor.
A break midway through allows time to rest and enjoy the riverside atmosphere before continuing towards Kingston. Those who fancy going further can extend their ride to reach Hampton Court Palace, adding an extra highlight to the journey. With its mostly flat terrain, the route is suitable for new and experienced cyclists alike, and electric bike upgrades are available for an even easier ride.
Guides are friendly and knowledgeable, making sure everyone feels comfortable throughout. Expect a mix of light exercise, good company, and the chance to explore a quieter side of London often missed by visitors.
Stretching between Richmond and Kingston, the chosen section of the Thames towpath offers a peaceful escape close to the capital. Riverside cottages, historic bridges, and tree-lined paths create a setting that feels miles away from the city, while wildlife and gentle river views add to the sense of calm.
Cyclists will pass key landmarks, including Ham House and Eel Pie Island, each with its own story to tell. The towpath is well surfaced, wide, and almost entirely traffic-free, making it one of the safest and most enjoyable places to cycle in southwest London. It’s a fantastic route for those who enjoy a blend of culture, nature, and gentle adventure.
Riders should feel comfortable cycling for up to two hours on even ground and have a reasonable level of fitness. The pace is steady and beginner-friendly, so you don’t need to be an experienced cyclist to take part.
Wear comfortable clothing that suits the weather, and bring a lightweight jacket in case of rain. Helmets and high-quality Trek mountain bikes are provided, with electric bikes available for a small additional cost. Lockable storage is available at the meeting point for any personal belongings you don’t want to carry.
Led by a passionate team of outdoor professionals, each session is shaped by years of experience and a genuine love for sharing adventure. Every instructor is qualified through organisations such as BSUPA, WSA, Paddle UK, and ASI, bringing top-level expertise and a friendly approach to every ride.
Safety, enjoyment, and encouragement sit at the heart of each experience. Whether you’re new to cycling or an experienced rider looking for a new route, you’ll be guided by people who know the area inside out and genuinely enjoy helping others make the most of their time outdoors.
Not necessarily. The tour follows a flat, traffic-free route along the towpath, so it’s ideal for beginners as well as those who cycle more regularly. Before setting off, your instructor will make sure everyone feels comfortable on their bikes and understands how to use the gears and brakes safely.
The pace is relaxed and sociable, giving you plenty of time to take in the scenery and chat with others. If you’re a little nervous or prefer some extra support, an e-bike upgrade is available, which makes pedalling effortless without taking away from the experience.
All riders are supplied with well-maintained Trek mountain bikes, chosen for their comfort, reliability, and suitability for mixed terrain. These bikes are easy to handle, with smooth gear changes and comfortable seating to ensure an enjoyable two-hour ride.
Electric bikes can also be provided for an additional cost. They offer pedal assistance to make cycling easier, particularly useful for those who’d like to conserve energy or simply enjoy a gentler experience while keeping up with the group.
Yes. The route follows the Thames towpath, which is completely traffic-free for the majority of the ride. You’ll be guided by a qualified mountain bike instructor who is trained in both group management and first aid, ensuring a safe and well-organised outing from start to finish.
There are a few points where you’ll cross minor paths or bridges, but your instructor will give clear directions and keep everyone together. The surfaces are generally flat and well maintained, making it a great route even for those less confident on a bike.
Comfort is key. Lightweight sportswear or active clothing works best, paired with trainers or flat shoes. Avoid jeans or clothing that may restrict movement, and bring a lightweight waterproof jacket in case the weather changes. Layers are useful if it’s cool at the start but warms up later in the ride.
Helmets are included in your booking and must be worn at all times while cycling. You’re welcome to bring your own if you prefer, as long as it meets safety standards. Sunglasses and gloves can also make your ride more comfortable, especially in bright or breezy conditions.
Rides usually continue in light rain or overcast weather, as the towpath is well maintained and remains safe to cycle on. Participants are advised to bring a waterproof jacket and dress appropriately for the conditions. Cycling in light drizzle can actually be quite refreshing and adds to the adventure.
In the event of extreme weather, such as heavy rain, strong winds, or thunderstorms, the session will be rescheduled or a credit offered. Your safety always comes first, and you’ll be contacted as soon as possible if there are any changes to the plan.
Yes, families are welcome, and children aged 14 and over can take part if accompanied by a parent or guardian. The route is calm and safe, and instructors ensure the group stays together throughout the ride. It’s a great activity for parents and teenagers to enjoy together.
If your family group includes mixed fitness levels, consider upgrading one or two bikes to electric models so everyone can ride comfortably at the same pace. It’s a great way to keep the ride enjoyable for all abilities.
Absolutely. A short break is planned roughly halfway through the session, giving riders time to rest, have a drink, or take photos. The Thames towpath offers plenty of beautiful viewpoints and historic spots, so there are natural places to pause along the route.
Your instructor will adjust the stops based on group preference and weather conditions. If you’d like to grab a quick refreshment, there are cafés near Kingston where the group can take a short detour if time allows.
It was an amazing experience that we will definitely be doing again soon! The service was absolutely amazing and extremely helpful and we enjoyed it so much! Definitely recommed !
